A long, thin cast copper-alloy object. It is rectangular in plan, and in section takes the form of a rectangle with rounded corners. Towards one end of the fragment it twists such that the wider face is perpendicular to the main body of the object. High levels of wear and corrosion make it difficult to attribute this artefact a definitive use. The attribution of a probable Roman date comes primarily from the large amounts of Roman material found in the locale.

A worn cast copper-alloy fragment of probable Roman date. The fragment is essentially rectangular both in plan and in section. It is largely undecorated on all of its faces although a number of raised ridges emerge from the obverse. Since these ridges are broken, as are the ends of the fragment, it is difficult to attribute this artefact a definitive use. The attribution of a probable Roman date comes primarily from the large amounts of Roman material found in the locale.

A cast copper alloy unidentifiable object, which is most probably late post-medieval in date or modern. The object has been formed from one solid pressed plate of copper alloy. The object is roughly rectangular in shape, but one terminal is larger and more rounded. There is a small square piece of copper alloy plate projecting from one of the longer edges of the object. There are two iron attachments on the reverse of the object. One at the narrow terminal and the other next to the rounded end. There appears to be traces of iron staining left on the concave side of the press plate. The…

A fragment of lead, which is decorated with a moulded design on one face. The fragment is flat and irregular in shape, measuring 31mm in length and 16mm in width. The front face has longitudinal mouldings which seem likely to be the folds of a robe worn by a standing individual. This fragment therefore seems to be part of a larger decorative lead object. It is perhaps most likely to be post medieval in date.

A fragment of orangey clay with white ?chalk inclusions, baked hard. There is one part 9mm wide and slightly curving which is smooth and suggests itself either as a mould or perhaps from cladding something circular in section. Although too thick for wall plaster, this may be a piece of masonry. It is almost certainly ancient, and probably Roman in date. Each 'wing' is decorated with four raised pointed ovals and at the centre behind the 'nose' is a larger pointed oval. One patch of patina remains intact on the underside, which is smooth and slightly curving. One of the loops is bent and a crack has appeared where the loop joins the main body of the object. If that loop is po…

Incomplete copper alloy unidentified object. The object is made from a single flat rectangular sheet of copper alloy. The object is now folded over in two however the wear and splitting on the fold indicates that this was not an original feature. One half of the sheet is plain, and the other is decorated. The decorated half is slightly arched along the centre, and the edges have been cut to give it a sawfish decoration. Each triangle is decorated with incised grooves. The object is broken at either end.

A copper alloy unidentified object - possibly a measure or scoop. The object has a rounded bowl (similar to a spoon) and a short (broken), square-sectioned handle/stem. On the reverse of the 'bowl' there what appears to be a flaw in the metal (forming a small raised hole). The break is worn and as a result of the break it is impossible to see how long the handle would have been. The object remains unidentified and undatable.

A cast copper alloy unidentifiable object, which is undatable. The object consists of a four lobed pointed terminal, with a rounded tip, 24.30mm long, from the base of which extends a circular section ‘arm’ approximately 18.70mm long. There is iron staining at the tip of the point, and at the break where the arm terminates, perhaps indicating an iron core to the object. The rest of the surface is light greyish green.

Incomplete cast copper alloy object of Unknown date. Length 59.4mm, maximum width 27mm and maximum thickness 6.2mm. Weight 31.77g. One face is moulded and the opposite face is flat and plain. The moulded face, in plan, resembles an incomplete spearhead with old breaks at the pointed (sharper end) and also at the “tang” end. It has a longitudinal raised mid-rib which tapers from the base of the “blade” towards the broken tip. On either side of the mid-rib, midway between the rib and the outer edge, is a groove. Each groove lies parallel to the mid-rib. Integral with the mid-rib,…

Cast cu-alloy object, probably casting residue from the crucible. Approximately 50% are unrecognisable, but the remaining arch resembles the bow of a Colchester one-piece fibula of the 1st century AD. Most of the spring coil is molten, but the part that crossed the head terminal of the bow is still in place(?). The other end of the bow terminates rather abruptly. This could have been a casting flaw and thus the reason why the brooch re-entered the recycling process.

Unidentified object with gilded and silvered decoration and an iron core. The object would require further cleaning to be identifiable. The object appears to have a rounded terminal and a narrower central square section. The other end appears distorted in shape and possibly broken. Traces of gilding remain in the copper alloy surface on both sides of the terminal. The central area has traces of silvering on one side. The copper alloy surface may be covering an iron core.

Fragment of a copper alloy object of unknown type, probably a strap fitting most likely of Medieval date. The object forms an open U-shaped frame, although its originally form is unknown as it is broken off at the sides. The sides are concave. The reverse of the frame is flat and the upper surface convex so that it is generally D-shaped in section. There is a large circular sectioned rivet on the reverse of the lower bar in the centre. The rivet expands to form a wide, flat circular terminal. The object is heavily worn.

Incomplete copper alloy object of unknown type. The object is circular in section and hollow. It tapers from the open end, which is broken off, to the terminal. The terminal is recessed, solid, flat on the upper and lower surfaces and has a circular perforation off centre. The main body of the object is damaged close to the terminal where there is an irregular hole. There also appear to be two rivet holes, one on either side close to the broken end of the object, which retain the remains of the iron rivet.

A fragment of an copper-alloy object. The fragmented nature of the object makes it very difficult to identify. The object is flat with a raised decorative ridge on one side, giving it a semi-circular look with wings when viewed in cross section. The remaining decoration takes the form of three separate bands comprised of a series of ribs. Tiny traces of gilding are just visible in the gaps between the bands. The reverse of the object has the remains of a lug, presumably for attachment purposes. This object has not been dated.

A broken copper-alloy object of uncertain function. The object is very likely to be of Roman date judging from its form and patina. The object has a circular base from which stems a shaft, circular in section. The base of the object measures 19.8 mm in diameter and the shaft is 7 mm thick. The shaft has a decorative rib which is broken, but appears to have once been hexagonal in shape. The shaft is broken at its top, just above an incised line which runs around it, and it is unclear how the artefact would have developed from here. The base has the remains of what is a possible solder o…
