Perforated amber bead, probably of Early Medieval or Anglo Saxon date. The bead is irregular; the underside is rounded and the two sides are moderately flat and meet forming a ridge (with an angle of around 100 degrees) at the top, the ends are also moderately flat and converge towards the top. The piercing is off-centre at one end and has a 3.3mm diameter, it is linear and has been drilled. The surface of the bead has discoloured and is now a dull orange -yellow colour. A small chip on the surface of the bead has exposed the glassy dark orange of the amber. The bead was reported with…

A copper-alloy object, perhaps a bead, probably medieval or early post-medieval in date. It is a short cylinder with a raised central rib and a groove on either side of the rib running around the middle. There is some wear or damage; one area of the lower edge is worn down. There is similar wear on the opposing upper edge. The wear on the upper edge is more extensive, extending almost to the lower edge. Small areas of dark green patina on a red/brown metal surface. Diameter: 4.97mm; thickness: 5.05mm; weight: 1.92g.

Probable unfinished copper alloy bead. The bead is plano-convex, with a drilled concave central depression. In the centre on the reverse is another partially drilled hole. The outer edge of the bead is very patinated and worn, however it does not show any signs of a break. The object seems to be too large to be an intaglio. Alternatively it could have been used as a gaming counter.

Cast copper alloy bead. The bead is circular in plan and subtriangular in section having bevelled side to both upper and lower faces of the bead. A casting seem is visible around its circumference. Most of the original surface survives with an even mid green patina. exposed surfaces are lighter green. the bead has a dimater of 12.98mm, is 5.46mm thick and weighs 2.59g. Beads are difficult to date, but given the patination and condition, this bead is probably Late Iron Age or Roman in date.

The object is possibly a cast copper alloy bead. There is no decoration which may help with the dating, hence the dating is wide, from the Roman period through to the Medieval period. On plan the bead is circular, and in profile it is a crescentic shape. The interior hole edges are both slightly abraded and are approximately 7.8mm in diameter. The surface of the bead has a slight green/brown coloured patina. It weighs 2.56g and measures 14.5mm in diameter and 7.7mm thick.

Cast copper alloy bead or ring. The bead is circular in plan and subtriangular in section having a slightly bevelled side to both upper and lower faces of the bead. There is no evidence of a casting seem and the bead is irregular in shape. It has a circular perforation. Most of the original surface is missing, but a small patch survives with an even mid green patina. Exposed surfaces are fractionally lighter and heavily abraded. The bead has a diameter of 16.38mm, is 8.34mm thick and weighs 8.11g. Beads are difficult to date, but the condition and patination of this object suggest it m…

A stylistically un-dateable cast copper alloy annular bead. It measures 13.9mm in diameter and weighs 3.39 grams. There is a circular hole through the centre of the bead, which measure 5mm. The surface is rough and has a dark greyish-green patina. Much of the original surface appears to have been lost. The bead is undecorated.

A complete monochrome glass bead of possible Anglo-Saxon date. This bead is circular in plan measuring 18.6mm in diameter and 7mm in thickness. It has a large circular central perforation, measuring 8mm in diameter. The glass is a light pale green in colour with air bubbles visible within the glass. There are circular marks around this bead, presumably where it has been worked. The pale colour is found on early Anglo-Saxon beads (e.g. Brugmann's Doughnut type) but is not particularly common in beads of this shape, which tend to be a deeper blue or green (e.g. Brugmann 2004, fig.…

Incomplete glass bead of possible Roman or Early Medieval date (AD 43 – AD 1066). Length 6mm, diameter 9.5mm. Weight 0.48g. The bead is opaque and bright blue. It is short and has convex sides with slightly flattened ends and could be described as being oblate in form. The surface has concentric striations which may be the result of a marving process. There is a centrally situated longitudinal perforation which has parallel sides. The diameter of the perforation is 3.8mm in diameter. A fracture has occurred across the perforation which has created two breaks so that about 40% of the…

Copper alloy bead, possibly of late Iron Age-early Roman date. The bead is circular with a large circular hole in the centre (D. 6.5mm). The inner edge is flat while the outer edges are curved, so that the object is D-shaped in section. The object is also thicker on one side (Th. 3.2-3.7mm) and the outer surface is uneven due to wear and damage. Patchy dark green patina.

Three glass beads, 1, this example is 11mm diameter with a 5mm diameter hole in the centre. It has a rich dark blue colour with white flecks throughout and a heavy semicircular cross-section with high walls. 2, is very similar to the first with the exception that this example is broken in two and has a slightly lighter colour, possibly because it is more weathered than the first. Nevertheless, because it is broken in two it is possible to see the method of manufacture. There are a series of lines that run around the surface of the object where the molten glass was coi…

A glass bead. The bead is cylindrical, with a flat top and bottom and rounded sides. The centre has a circular perforation. The bead is of a green-blue colour. Similar beads are illustrated in West (1998, page 144; figs 28.4.1 - 28.4.11). The bead is likely to be Early Anglo-Saxon in date but this colour and form were in use over a considerable period of time.

Glass Bead, the body of the bead is heavily damaged with about 65% of the object missing from the side and base, it is 25mm tall, has a radius of approximately 13mm and a central hole of 4mm. There are six distinct coloured layers that make up the bead. The first is a creamy light green colour undulating layer running around the hole in the centre, about 1.5mm deep. The second layer is a semi-clear green glass which is in turn surrounded by a white undulating layer. The forth layer is deep red and resembles ceramic more than glass, this is also surrounded by a white wavy layer. Th…

Cast copper alloy bead or ring with simple D-shaped section, with a non-metallic white/cream substance set into the internal surface, apparently set into a hollow in the back of the copper alloy ring. This substance appears to be thickly applied, although it is not possible to tell how far it extends inside the ring. The copper alloy is reddish-brown with some green areas and with little or no original surface remaining. The width of the ring is variable. External diameter 22.18mm, internal diameter 14.4mm, width (max)7.18mm - (min)5.12mm, weight 4.07g.
