Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy, two-piece strap-end. The strap end consists of a cast front plate, with the decorative terminal riveted to a sheet back plate. While the main part of the strap end is undecorated the terminal has diagonal grooves cut in it in an abstract design. This type of strap-end often has a terminal in the form of a kings head but this example looked more like a grotesque face. Two rivets could just be seen on the front of the strap end. Strap ends of this type found in London excavations (Egan & Pritchard 1991)have been dated to mid 14th to 15th centuries.

The line of the eye is continued as a small groove. The needle measures 77mm in length and 2mm diameter. The needle can be assigned to Crummy's Type 3 (Needles with a groove above and below the eye) (Crummy 1983, 67). Roman examples appear to be third or fourth century in date, although the type does recur in the post-medieval period, so there is a possibility that this find could be residual.

Implement made out of flint. The flint is vaguely leaf-shaped, and could possibly be a rough-out for a leaf-shaped arrowhead or a scraper. The flint is well patinated except for the areas showing definite retouch. The flint is a dark brown colour, and the patina is creamy-blue.
