A copper-alloy toilet spoon or ligula dating to the Roman period. At one end the object has a flat, oval scoop which extends at a 30 degree angle to the stem. The stem is circular in section and tapers slightly to a point at one end. It measures 105mm in length and the stem has a diameter of 2mm. The scoop has a length of 7mm and a width of 7mm. Small spoon probes like this were probably used to extract cosmetics from flasks, boxes and small pots and for some surgical and pharmaceutical purposes (Crummy 1983, 59).

A copper-alloy end-looped cosmetic mortar dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period. The body of the mortar is hemispherical in section with a U-shaped depression within which cosmetics could be ground. The grinding surface is scored and corroded with only some of the original surface remaining. The mortar tapers to a rounded point at one end and at the other to a suspension loop. Early Saxon lower bow and foot of Cruciform brooch, break not recent. Bow ends with a transverse groove above a notch on both sides. Foot begins with two more notches, a short gap and then a facet along both sides, then half-round moulding of four closely spaced ribs. The eyes of the animal-head terminal are of very unusual form, slightly protruding and outlined by grooves, lentoid but with outer ends truncated by the edges. On both faces there are low sub-square knobs near the sides, and a pointed knop at the rounded end. The lowest openwork aperture is single rather paired as is normal on strap-ends of this type. Broken across four apertures, close to the point at which a proximal end fragment from Middle Harling (HER 6033) was broken (EAA 74, fig. 41 no. 75). Surviving length 33mm. Mid Saxon/Late Saxon fragment consisting of front of split end of Thomas' Class A strap-end. Bilobed, two rivet holes, groove on one surviving side running from grooved palmette. The break is very jagged and the front surface next to it is deeply scarred. On the reverse there is no sign of the join with the rear part of the split end despite the fact that the fragment is 19mm long, excessive for a split end on this Class. 9th century.

Mid Saxon/Late Saxon incomplete strap-end of Thomas' Class A, outside edge / distal end missing. Two rivet holes in split end above an arrangement of five crescentic stamps (in place of the normal palmette in fan-shaped field motif). Both sides are followed by a groove. The area between these, where decoration would be expected, is concave and roughly finished, parts of the base stained silvery. Either decoration, most probably of niello and silver wire, has been entirely lost or was never applied. Length >35mm, width maximum 15mm, 7.5mm at proximal end. Split 11mm deep. 9th century.

This is probably a mis-read example of a seal of one of the popes Gregory, either Gregory VIII (but no other bullae are known of his) or, more likely, Gregory IX (written VIIII on his bullae). Gregory XI ruled from 1227 to 1241 and his bullae are relatively common.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon sleeve clasp of Hines's Class C, Miscellaneous form. The slightly convex T-shaped hook piece has one arm missing and is worn around the edges. The outer edge of the integral rectangular hook is also missing. The clasp is decorated with zoomorphic ornament with traces if gilding still remaining. The surviving length is 28.0mm, the width is 19.9mm and the weight is 3.66g. Compare Hines (1993) fig. 142, from Morningthorpe grave 360, and examples on the PAS database at YORYM-07B0E3 and NMS-740954.

An unusual incomplete cast copper-alloy clasp half, possibly the catch piece from an early Anglo-Saxon wrist or sleeve clasp. As the clasp-half is cast in one piece it has been classified as form B12 by John Hines (Hines pers comm 2005). Like other B12 examples it consists of a straight bar, cast in one, with loops for sewing to the garment, and a decorative knob in the middle of the rear edge giving a T-shape. The object is one half of a purse bar frame, made from cast copper alloy. Ward-Perkins in the Museum of London Catalogue comments these frames were not used until the late Medieval period, and illustrates two similar examples (Plate 33) which are dated to the late 15th century. The purse bar is a sub-circular in section. One terminal is broken, this break is towards the centre of the complete bar. Fragment of a mount with integral suspension loops from a sword belt. This piece is just one section of the mount with one of the integral circular suspension loops. The full mount would normally have three loops and separate hooked fittings hanging from each one. The fragment has foliate cast decoration. The piece measures 29.44mm in length, 17.03mm in width, 3.27mm in thickness and weighs 3.83g.

A copper alloy sword belt mount, the main plate [70mm by 30mm] of which has fleur de lis shaped ends with rivet hole in each. The lower edge has three perforated lugs. One of these still has the pendant fitting consisting of a plate, 45mm long & 17mm wide with curved edges terminating in a rod which loops through the hole and is bent back on itself. Traces of foliar designs can be seen under the soil on the object. A similar belt mount from West Somerset has been dated to the 16th century(Read 2001, p43 no 373).

A cast copper-alloy sword belt fitting. The flat asymmetrical plate has an elongated trefoil terminal, which is waisted to a drop-shaped central area. This central area then expands to oval area which then tapers to an integral hook with a rounded knop on then end. Glass intaglio on a small oval copper alloy plate. The glass is black and has a moulded design of a head to the left , fairly simple in style on a triangular neck. Diameters 13mm x 11.5mm, 2mm thick. This setting was originally in the centre of an oval brooch (see Hattattt's "oval enamelled brooches with intaglio" group, nos 1207-1209, 1653)of British type which mostly had similar heads where the settings survive. Reported to Cambridge University by present owner who purchased it.

Two identifical cast lead alloy belt fittings dating to the post medieval period. The belt fittings are circular in plan, on the front they have a half moon with a face to one side, this side also has the remains of a circular loop. The other side of there is a six sided star. The half mounts points join directly onto the six sided star. At the back of the fitting there are two pointed hooks (mount shafts) which are still attached to the remains of leather (which would indicate this was attached directly to a belt), these are placed either side of the middle of the circle.

Copper alloy bucket mount in the form of a bird. The bird has a ridged lozenge shaped body, with a flared tail and a narrow thin head with a downward pointing beak. The wing tips of the bird extend into an integral loop below, giving the object the appearence of a small finger ring. Similar 'bird rings' tend to be dated to the Roman period (compare PUBLIC-220C8C, LIN-F1A832, NLM-8A6096, LIN-A7F4BA, LIN-BE7512) but there is also a small group with decoration that indicates a late early-medieval group (e.g. NMS-19DC77 and LIN-FC5E13).

Copper alloy pin from a brooch or buckle, probably late medieval - post medieval in date. The pin is rectangular in section and tapers to a slightly rounded point. At the wider end there are the remains of a loop which would have attached the pin to the buckle/brooch (this would have been circular but half has broken away). On the top of the pin there is a small raised notch to prevent the pin from bending too far back on itself. The pin weighs 3.1g and measures 40.79mm in length, 7.9mm in width and 3.05mm in thickness.

A cast copper alloy Type B3 post-medieval purse bar. This purse bar dates to the late 15th - early 16th century. All that survives are the bars and the central block. The bars have both been bent down. The short bars are complete with their twisted terminals. The small central block is shield-shaped and is undecorated. The length of the central block is 11.74mm, the width is 7.20mm and the aperture for the shank is 5.6mm. The rove, shank and loop are all missing. Late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy Colchester one piece bow brooch. The brooch has a semi-circular cross sectioned bow plain bow which tapers to a point. The brooch is missing its spring, pin and most of its catchplate. The brooch is 60mm long, 20mm wide and 5mm thick. A similar Colchester brooch is illustrated by Hattatt R. (2007), Fig. 155, no. 250.
