A corroded copper alloy stirrup mount [Williams' Class A, Type 1] dating to the eleventh century AD. The mount is flat and lozengiform with a sub rectangular base. A right angled flange extends from the underside of the base. There are two complete rivet holes immediately above the flange. No decoration is visible on the body of the mount although this may be the result of corrosion. At the apex of the mount is a further rivet hole which has been punched slightly off centre. It is worn and damaged. The stirrup mount has a length of 47mm and a maximum width of 28mm. Similar examples are illustrated in Williams (1997, 27-34) Williams states that these mounts largely date to the 11th century AD, particularly due to the decorative similarities of the Class A, Type 1 mounts with Late Viking Ringerike and Urnes styles. The mounts have a wide distribution within England with some also appearing on the Continent. However, the majority have been found in southern and eastern England.

The mount is formed from a T bar shape, with the downward vertical, central bar being shorter than the arms of the cross bar. The centre of the mount, where the three arms integrally conjoin, is slightly expanded, with a slight arching to the middle of the cross bar.It is semicircular in section having a flat reverse with domed front. The main body of the mount is decorated with a double strand interlace design that expands along the cross bar and down the central vertical bar. At either end of the interlace design on the cross bar is a rivet hole, complete with copper alloy rivet. Each end of the crossbar and the vertical bar terminates in a zoomorphic head. Each head is a simply rendered blunt-nosed beast with two raised dots for eyes with moulded eyebrows above. At either end of the crossbars, the zoomorphic head continues from the front around the back, but only as far as the back of the snout, from which point the bar is flat. This in effect gives the mount a recess within which the scabbard fitted. The mount has an even mid brown patina. The mount is 64.76mm wide, 34.44mm long, 4mm thick and weighs 23.89g.
An exact parallel for the mount could not be found. Dr Kevin Leahy suggested that the mount was similar to an example from a sword scabbard from Skane, Sweden, though the decoration is different. He suggests that the interlace design and the terminals are at least based on the Viking Borre style, which was in use in the late 9th and earlier 10th century. It would be fair to suggest that this scabbard mount fits within that time scale.
