Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy strapend [Thomas Class A] dating to the ninth century AD. The strapend comprises a single, flat, approximately triangular piece of copper alloy. The attachment end is missing. The body of the strap end is decorated with a sub rectangular panel of cast interlace decoration. This decoration is very worn. Beyond this is some raised moulded decoration perhaps representing ears or limbs. The terminal is zoomorphic with nose and eyes clearly rendered. The underside of the strap end is plain. Object type: NAIL CLEANER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of copper alloy Roman nail cleaner. This object represents the truncated shaft of the nail cleaner. It is subrectangular in plan and flat in section and tapers to a forked point. An incised line runs from each point of the fork, continuing up the shaft, to both surfaces. The break on the shaft is almost horizontal. The break edge is worn smooth suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The fragment has a brown patina with tiny patches of yellowy beige corrosion product. It has a surviving length of 22.46mm, is 7.82mm at the widest point, 3.88mm at the forked point, is 1.3mm thi…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy Romano-British Hod Hill brooch. The whole brooch is fairly flat, and bent double at the bow (the length of 35mm therefore represents the maximum length now, the orignal length is uncertain). The foot is a flattened knob. Above the foot is a straight tapering leg, decorated with moulded cross ribs. The catchplate behind is broken. The bow is narrow and decorated with a raised central rib and a raised border at either edge. At the top of the bow there are 2 side wings/knobs, each with 2 raised ribs, carrying on the decoration of the main part of the bow. The he…

A gilded copper alloy rowel spur, with an angled neck and rowel box. Measurement of the slot for the rowel suggests that the rowel was about 50mm in diameter. The surviving side has a figure of eight terminal attached by one of the loops rather than centrally. The sides and neck are decorated with small rectangular protrusions alternately along the sides and with wriggle work. It is considered (Ellis in Clark, 1995)that spur sides are curved until the mid 15th century and that after about 1450 the curve lessens until they are completely straight. This straight sided spur therefore, is …

Object type: TERMINAL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy terminal in the form of a standing figure. This crude figure has been made in three dimensions to represent a standing, draped figure, presumably of a Roman-like female. The figure is shown fully draped with the left arm down the side of the body and the right arm raised to the face. The right hand clearly has a finger raised to the face and seems to be picking its nose. The face is rudimentary and only the raised nose and incised eyes are visible. The hairstyle is crudely and plainly moulded to show a roll of hair around the head with a bun. The figure has broken away fro…

Fragment of copper alloy. This fragment is subtriangular in section tapering towards one end, and subrectangular in plan with a distinct curve. It is heavily abraded, but it is possible to see that the tapering end is cast so as to appear slightly raised from the rest of the object. Superficially, the object looks like a bird’s head that would taper to a pointed beak. The original surface is mostly gone, but where it survives it has a dark green patina. Otherwise it shows patches of bright green and creamy corrosion product. The object is 16.9mm long, 5.8mm wide, 7.1mm thick and weig…
