A fragment of a very worn and illegible mediaval hammered silver coin. The original flan must have been larger than 20mm though thin, so it is probable that the coin was a larger denomination than a penny, maybe a groat or half groat, and probably later rather than earlier (Tudor rather than Plantagenet?).

A copper alloy mid 17th century halfpenny token, issued by Richard Stockdale of Hull in 1665. His profession is not clear from the token but Thompson and Dickinson suggest he was a mariner. A lot of these tokens were issued by private merchants across the country in the mid 17th century, particularly in the late 1660s, presumably reflecting a shortage of official small change. Charles II began minting an official copper coinage in 1672 to address this.

A cut half hammered silver voided long cross penny of Henry III. It is identifiable as a North Class 5a from the portrait (pellets at the end of the crown in place of lys and the pellet in annulet eyes) and inscription (starts at the sceptre at 10 o'clock, has a ligated N and R, the letter R is ball-tailed, and the letter X has a trailing tail). This dates it to 1250-c 1256. The moneyer is Nicole, and though the mint town is missing it must be either Canterbry or London given the moneyer and class. [l-c5a]

A small cast copper alloy late medieval knife pommel. The pommel has a collar where it would have joined the handle. It is then divided into 2 halves along the length of the knife by a deep groove. The 2 parts curve apart, giving the overall pommel a Y-shape. The flat ends of the Y are decorated in a rough zoomorphic style, with punched rectangular eyes and raised nostrils creating crude animal heads.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy medieval strap end. It is made of 2 flat plates, one slightly larger than the other - the front plate? These are joined together (soldered?) at the terminal end, and splayed apart at the attachment end to take the leather strap. There is a central rivet through both plates at the attachment end to fix it to the strap. Both plates are completely undecorated on their surfaces but have a very fine green patina, and the terminal end is decorated with a projecting knop.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rectangular copper alloy apothecaries weight. It is marked with the symbol for 2 scruples on one side (a retrograde rounded capital 'E', followed by an 'i' and a 'j'), and '2 scruple' on the other. It should weigh 2.6g, so is slightly underweight. Apothecaries became an independent trade in 1617 and adopted the scruple and drachm measures, but their weights were not legally regulated until 1878-9 (following the Weights and Measures Act). As this is underweight and has no verification mark it probably predates this.
