The strap fitting is a mount. The mount has a symmetrical 'U' shape in profile. The fold of the mount is rounded and is sub semi-circular in section. The two integral vertical arms are relatively straight and are both rectangular in section. Both arms have two rivet holes on each with the remains of iron rivets in each hole. Both outer faces of the arms have traces of gilding. The surface of the mount has traces of a mid green patina, otherwise the surface is heavily abraded. The mount measures 40.09mm long, 10.19mm wide and 16.2mm thick at the fold. It weighs 10.87g. Egan and Pritc…

Part of a broken cast copper alloy sword belt fitting dating from the sixteenth or seventeenth century. Less than half of the fitting survives, consisting of part of the plate with one suspension loop (which would have been fitted to a belt) and part of one hook, which is attached to the suspension loop. The hook would have been fitted onto the scabbard straps for a sword. It appears that on this example, the plate would have originally three suspension loops. The surviving part of the plate is curvilinear, 27.46mm long by 23.37 wide by 2.25mm thick, with cast scrolled foliage decorati…

Copper alloy mount fragment, probably from a sword belt. At one end of the mount there is a rectangular section with a central rectangular aperture and a circular loop extending from one side. The two long sides of the rectangular frame are slightly convex on the upper surface with flat reverses so that they are D-shaped in section. The short edges are thicker than the long edges. One of the short edges is convex forming a small arch between the two long edges. The upper surface of this edge is also convex and has moulded rope decoration, now badly worn. The other short edge is n…

The object is possibly a strap end or a buckle plate. Only one plate remains, which is a sub elongated trapezoid in plan. The narrow terminal has an abraded ‘V’ shape and this is possibly a broken rivet hole. In profile the plate is bent forming a rounded ‘L’ shape. Both surfaces are undecorated and have a mid green/blue coloured patina. The plate measures 38.23mm long and 15.34mm wide. It weighs 4.53g. The colour of the green/blue patina colour is usually found on objects of Roman date, however the shape of the plate may suggest a Medieval date if it is a s…

The object is possibly a strap end or a buckle plate. Only one plate remains, which is an elongated trapezoid in plan. In profile the plate is crumpled forming a sub ‘J’ shape. Both surfaces are undecorated and have a patchy mid green patina. One terminal is possibly a broken edge, but if it is, it is not a recent break. The plate measures 24.54mm long and 13.16mm wide. It weighs 2.39g. The colour of the patina and the shape of the plate may suggest a Medieval date. However the function of the plate is not certain, as there are no visible rivets or rivets holes on w…

Copper alloy mount, probably from a sword-belt consisting of a plate with a hook. At one end there is a hook which is quite flat at the junction with the plate then thickens to become D-shaped in section (Th. 2.2-3.7mm). The end of the hook is broken off. The plate is flat and expands from the junction with the hook before contracting again, forming rounded projections to either side (Th. 2.15mm). The plate then expands gradually before tapering again forming a broadly trapezoidal element. The plate then expands sharply again to form the trefoil terminal. There are two rivet hole…

Copper alloy mount with an integral pointed lug. The mount is generally triangular and is slightly convex with a concave reverse. The upper surface has moulded decoration in the form of a central triangular motif with a large beaded border. The edge of the mount is also beaded and there is a raised transverse ridge across each corner. The single integral pointed lug protrudes from the reverse, is rectangular in section and is bent over. Considerable gilding survives on the upper surface with traces also present on the reverse.

Copper alloy single plate with a hook. The plate is flat on the reverse, the upper surface forming a central ridge so that it is triangular in section (L. 16mm. W. 8.7mm. Th. 5.6mm). There are two large circular sectioned rivets located at each end of the plate on the reverse. The hook, which is thinner than the plate, extends from one end of the plate, is inward curving and tapers gently to a rounded point (D. 20.6mm. W. 8.1-4.3mm. Th. 5.15-3.3mm). The inner surface of the hook is slightly convex and the upper surface is convex so that the hook is broadly oval in section. The…
