A lead personal seal matrix of mid to late 13th century date. The seal die is pointed-oval and flat, and has a projection at the top containing a horizontal attachment hole. The object is worn, bent and corroded. It measures 44.1mm high by 25.5mm wide and 5.6mm thick. The central image sits within an indented border and, when printed, depicts a man standing on the left hand end of a boat, facing right and steering the boat with a long rudder pole. Damaged lead vesica-shaped seal matrix. The matrix has a foliage motif in the centre and an inscription surrounding it reading: S:'AGNETIS FILIE ALAN (Seal of Agnes daughter of Alan). The inscription appears to be complete and the damage at the end of ALAN looks to be where the lead has been split and squashed rather than being missing. The suspension loop on the reverse is missing.

Fragment of a probably lead seal matrix. The object looks to be one quarter of a vessica shaped seal matric. The reverse is flat and plain. The face of the object has an incised line running down the long edge. This is more likely to be a mark caused during the cutting up of the seal rather than decoration, for the line runs through other decorative motifs and the legend surrounding it. The other motifs are uncertain although there appears to be a circle with a pellet in the centre. The legend is difficult to read: there perhaps a G followed by F' A?M. The last letter is probabl…

Copper alloy matrix for a lozenge-shaped seal (35 x 29mm). The matrix depicts a lion rampant left surrounded by crosses with crosslets on three arms and a pointed fourth arm. The design is surrounded by a border of diagonal lines. There is a horizontal line separating the uppermost cross from the rest of the matrix, with three vertical lines below it, as an E on its side. The upper part of the matrix rises to form a sub-hexagonal handle, with three ridges below a pierced trefoil terminal. The upper surface of one point of the lozenge is stamped with a six-pointed star.

Item unseen, recorded from impression. A vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, material unknown. Impression shows signs of a damaged surface on the matrix proper; the last few letters of the legend are almost illegible. Device: face and shoulders of a man in profile, facing right. He is clean-shaven, with short, curly hair, on top of which he may be wearing some sort of close-fitting hat. Prominent nose. Device separated from legend by a line; a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix. Measurements: 21 mm x 28 mm (approx.).

A copper-alloy medieval circa 14th century seal matrix of 'chess pawn' type. It measures 25.6mm in height, it has a lozenge shaped suspension loop with a circular hole through its centre. The shaft has a hexagonal cross-section and the die is circular in shape measuring 20.6mm in diameter. In the centre is a 'pelican in her piety' motif - a bird with three chicks in a goblet-like nest, pecking blood from her chest to feed her chicks with. This motif represents Christ sacrificing himself for the world. The inscription around the outside reads SVXPRDIVEI. This appears to be a blu…

A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The artefact has a faceted ?hexagonal handle terminating in irregular trefoil shaped suspension loop. The face depicts a seated Virgin and child, monkey below. The imagery in addition to the form of this matrix suggests a later medieval date for this object. The legend (see below) reveals that a 'John' would have owned this seal matrix, although the rest of the legend is unintelligible.

Three quarters of a lead circular seal matrix. Missing section is probably the very top of the matrix, meaning that the legend is illegible at that point. Back appears to have been flat and plain, although there may have been a small protrusion at the centre back. Thickened section above may be the flattened remains of the suspension loop. Device: Remains of an eight-petalled compass flower. Measurements: 30 mm x 26 mm; original diameter 30 mm plus.

Missing section is the bottom right, but the edge is also damaged at the top left, meaning that the legend is illegible at that point. Device: remains of an eight-petalled compass flower, with the breaks being along the flower petals. A lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix with slight bends at edges. Back is in relatively poor condition, but a pattern of dots suggest that it had a semi-raised design of either a fleur-de-lys, with the end of the midrib flaring out to form the uppermost petal and the lug, apparently unperforated, at the base. The other two falls were delineated by dots; alternatively, it may have been a design of three spirals. Device is a semi-abstract floral design consisting of two elegant fleur-de-lys-like falls. Above this, two lines of similar thickness to the falls curving inward to fo…
