A complete copper-alloy pointed oval shaped seal matrix in good condition, medieval and circa 14th century in date. This seal matrix measures 31mm in length and 19mm in width. It has an integral suspension loop behind one tip on the back face. The front face has a border inscription which begins with a siz pointed star and reads; S' THOME LE BIGOD and ends with a fleur-de-lis motif. This is therefore a personal seal matrix with inscription meaning 'The seal of Thomas Le Bigod.' In centre of the seal is a quadruped which is walking right with a long tail curled above its back and feath…

Circular copper alloy seal matrix, back unseen but decribed as hexagonal and in good condition other than the fact that the top of the suspension loop is missing. Device of an eagle displayed, head turned to the left. Across the top of the chest and outspread wings a ribband or scroll, from which are suspended three? small shields. Arms on these are very difficult to read: leftmost shield, a pallium; centre shield, fleurs-de-lys; rightmost shield, indecipherable. The whole is separated from the legend by a beaded line, and a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix.

Lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix with flat plain back other than broken suspension loop middle top. Device area relatively small, containing a very stylish fleur-de-lys separated from legend by a line. The legend reads + S' lVLIANE · CVRTENEI·(Latin: "The Seal of Juliana Curtney/Courtney").
Two pairs of combined letters visible, viz., the "V" and "R" of Curtney have been run together into one letter, as have the "N" and "E", in the process producing a straight-backed "E" rather than the more common curved Lombardic letter. Curtney appears to be used as a full surna…

A complete cast copper alloy medieval seal matrix. The die is circular in plan and is cut with a crowned W with in an incised six pointed star (two triangles superimposed). This design all lies within an incised line border at the edge of the die face. The shaft is conical and six sided and terminates in a sub lozenge shaped loop. Beneath the loop is an integrally moulded collar consisting of three stepped bands the largest on top. The die has a diameter of 18.54mm. The over all length of the matrix is 27.9mm and it weighs 11.69g. It is mid green in patina with much of the original sur…

Incomplete cast copper alloy seal matrix. This seal matrix is sub circular in plan and flat in section. The die face is badly worn with some damage, but it is possible to see what may be the negative design of a cockerel with a plumed tail. Nothing remains of an inscription, if there was one at all. The reverse of the matrix is plain. A central rib runs along the length of the die and this is now worn and abraded. The loop is missing and all that remains are the lower portions. The seal die has a diameter of 17.36mm and is 3.56mm thick. The object weighs 3.81g. Given the impersonal na…

Lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix. Slightly curved, with plain back other than an intact suspension loop slightly above the mid-point. Device of what appears to be a skeletal fish within a fine line; a similar line denotes the outer edge of the matrix. The rather untidy inscription reads S' EMME D MATTELTON or similar (Seal of Emma of Mattelton, or possibly Middleton or Nettleton). There seems to be no initial mark, with the S at the top of the matrix and retrograde.

Lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, reverse flat and undecorated with an intact suspension loop set a little below the top. The matrix is in reasonable condition, but slightly bent with edges crumbling. The central device is a crescent moon, horns upwards, with a six-pointed star above and a five-pointed star below (cf. IHS-381631). The device is bounded by a fine groove. Outside the groove is the inscription, which reads + S ADAM: TAINLE: (Seal [of] Adam Tainle). The forename Adam is in the nominative, not the normal genitive. The surname has no obvious modern counterpart.…

The object is seal matrix made from cast copper alloy and has an incised legend. Seal matrices such as this date to the 13th to 14th century.
The seal matrix is a pointed oval in plan. It is a flat back type, which has a small integral loop on the reverse, at one corner, with a diminishing ridge extending from the loop to the opposite corner. The device of the seal matrix is uncertain, there is a horizontal crescentic shape with a sub ‘X’ shape, whose are arms slightly wavy. The legend is unclear.
The surface of the seal matrix is in poor condition, it is corroded with…

Complete, but badly worn, cast copper alloy seal matrix. This seal matrix is lenticular, or a pointed oval, in plan. It is flat in section. To the rear of the seal matrix is an elongated circular loop, with the circular perforation blocked by corrosion product. To die face is cut with a negative inscription within a border, surrounding a central design of a standing figure holding an unknown object. Unfortunately corrosion product has obscured both the legend and design, making it impossible to take an impression. This matrix is probably the private, non-heraldic seal of an individual,…

A complete copper alloy medieval seal matrix. The die is circular in plan and shows the image of a six-lined star, with the top line extending into a Maltese cross, within a beaded border. Around the die in negative, are the letters S’IOENP+OERNN. This is a blundered legend, supported by the fact that some of the letterforms are quite poor. The shaft is conical, six sided and terminates in a sub circular loop. The die is 21.38mm in diameter. The over all length of the matrix is 23.68mm and it weighs 16.79g. Complete, but in two halves, post-medieval silver seal matrix. The die is oval in plan and shows the negative design of a galleon with three pairs of sails, but not actually showing the masts, and front and rear castles, without a border. There is no lettered inscription. The shaft is conical and terminates in a circular loop, beneath which is an integral moulded collar, flush with the shaft. The shaft has broken approximately half way along its length. There is damage to the rear of the die face, which has resulted in a hole. The damage edges, though not fresh, are not worn, suggestin…
