Complete cast copper 14th century medieval seal matrix. The seal matrix is circular in plan and flat in section. To the reverse is a transverse circular loop that would have been held as the seal was applied. The seal die shows the design of two heads, a man and woman, facing each other with a flowering plant between them. The inscription, inscribed in negative, around the central design is worn, but reads JE SVL SEL DE AMUR LEL or ‘I am the seal of loyal love’. Anonymous seals of this type are known as ‘love and loyalty’ seals, due to their sentimental or witty…

Part of a lead, vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix. Less than 50% of this seal matrix remains intact with the legend being too damaged to be legible, and the central design difficult to understand. In its current state the latter consists of three swirls, which are part of a larger design, perhaps floral in content.

There are four dots outside the cross formed by the median line, one in each angle, and four dots outside the thick-limbed cross, again one in each angle, making eight dots in total. The inscription is set between lines and reads + SIGILL'. ADE. FIL'. REG (Latin: Seal of Adam son of Reginald).

An incomplete cast copper-alloy seal matrix. The seal has a hexagonally faceted conical handle ending in an incomplete circular pierced terminal. The motif in the centre of the circular die is a pelican in her piety' and is a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. The bird is almost skeletal and is feeding her three young who are in the nest below her. The die is incomplete around the edge so the legend is no longer visible. However, it may have read [*SUM PELLICANVS DEI]. The length of the seal is 22.3mm, the surviving diameter of the die is 20.5mm and the weight is 7.68g.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy seal matrix. The small seal matrix has a hexagonally faceted conical handle, which is incomplete at the handle. The motif in the centre of the circular die is possibly a sheep facing left, though it could also be a crayfish or crab with a star above it. However, since the seal matrix was found in Lincolnshire it is most likely that the motif is a sheep. The legend around the edge reads *WA-AL---A. This may be a version of Walter or may describe the motif in the centre. The surviving length of the seal is 13.3mm, the diameter of the die is 14.8mm and the…

Vesica-shaped (pointed oval) lead seal matrix with cast design of an ornate fleur-de-lys on reverse, said fleur being inverted in relation to the matrix's suspension loop. Device of an inverted cross engrailed occupying a relatively small portion of the device area. Lettering separated from device area by a neat fine line; a similar line denotes the outer edge of the matrix. From the image, it can be seen that the inscription reads S' LAVRENCI PISTORIS, or Seal of Laurence Baker (compare HAMP3150, the seal of Nicholas Baker). 'Pistor' is Latin for 'baker'. It was originally read…

A lead medieval circa 13th century seal matrix. Circular in shape and now slightly distorted measuring c29.8mm in diameter. One face has a incised six petalled flower in its centre and a border inscription. This inscription is now very worn and appears to read, S' WILTI P/T U [ ]VIRH, the letters are a mixture of upper and lower case. The inscription is likely to be an individuals name and this seal matrix to be a personal seal, some of the letters may be misread as they are very unclear, therefore the name itself is not known. On the reverse face of this seal matrix there is a e…
