Lead seal matrix, circular. Simple cross surrounded by legend, which reads +S'WIL[-]ALNS, probably meaning 'Seal of William'. Unusually, there is a design on the reverse, in the form of a quadruped (a horse or deer?) and curved lines. Also on the reverse is the possible remains of a broken suspension loop.

A medieval silver seal matrix dating to the 13th century, set with a late antique gem. The matrix is oval, and from the photographs of the reverse appears to have a small oval backplate with an integral suspension loop, soldered to a deep bevelled edge. The legend is in Roman capitals and reads + PONITE: LITERAS: ISTAS: INSIGL: SILLV. SECRT' (Place your letter under a secret seal). The Ns are retrograde and the first three colons are triple-dotted; the final letter is unclear, with several triangular dots after it, perhaps abbreviation marks. The gemstone, made of red jasper, is…

Cast copper alloy seal matrix. The seal matrix is circular, with a six-sided handle projecting from the reverse. This handle ends in a trefoil-shaped suspension loop which itself has an oval projecting knop at its terminal. The loop is bent at a slight angle to the handle, perhaps deliberately as a guide to the orientation of the seal. As a further guide, there is a series of three incised markings on the rim of the seal and the handle in line with the top of the seal motif; these comprise an irregular cross on the rim, an 'X', and a vertical line with three lines across it. The m…

The original record had no description. The following description was compiled from the photographs. Copper-alloy seal matrix, flat and pointed-oval in shape. The central motif is a very simple engraved cross with seriffed ends. The inscription around is between beaded borders, and reads * S' PRIS. ROGERI DE. OS. PITAL' The meaning of this inscription is currently obscure but it clearly refers to a Roger of the Hospital. Reaney and Wilson note a Geoffrey del Hospital in Somerset in 1210 (1976, 329, under Spittle). The reverse is flat, with a rib at one end which tapers to a po…

Medieval circular seal matrix with a diameter of 27mm. Cast in copper alloy this matrix has a ridge on the reverse, which is triangular in profile with a central circular hole for suspension. The matrix has a central lozenge shape, possibly a shield, with a floral design. An incised line borders either side of the legend, however no impression was provided thus legend remains unknown.
