A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The artefact has a faceted ?hexagonal handle terminating in irregular trefoil shaped suspension loop. The face depicts a seated Virgin and child, monkey below. The imagery in addition to the form of this matrix suggests a later medieval date for this object. The legend (see below) reveals that a 'John' would have owned this seal matrix, although the rest of the legend is unintelligible.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy seal matrix with oval face and short, broken handle probably dating to the post-medieval period. The handle is central and possibly faceted; it is difficult to tell from the image provided (see notes, below). Depicted on the bordered face is a device probably of a heart pierced by two arrows in saltire, with the fletchings presumably uppermost. The wavy lines stream out from the top of the heart, presumably depicting burning. Either side of the heart is an indistinct object, possibly a tiny burning heart; the depiction is quite crude. This device is echo…

Recorded from photographs and finder's information, piece unseen. Large copper alloy circular seal matrix, hexagonal handle tapering to a collar topped with a drilled trefoliar suspension loop. Cevice consists of two figures, that on the left male, on the right female, each holding what appears to be a sapling planted in a pot between them; four dots at the top may belong to this. Both figures are clad in floor-length gowns, and only differentiated by hair length, with the man's being chin length, the girl's half-way down her back. Measurements: 30 mm diameter, approx. 30 mm high.

A vesica-shaped (pointed oval) lead seal matrix, back unseen. Device appears to be a version of the alchemical symbol for antimony or alum, consisting of two opposed sets of three branches joined by a central line. The upper set has curved outer arms, rather like a candelabrum, pointing upwards; the lower trio point down, and are shaped like a trident with curved tines. Device is separated from legend by a shaky groove; a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix face. Inscription reads +SIGILL WMLTERI ALCh' (Seal of Walter Alch). There is a line across the LL of SIGILL indicati…

A cast lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) medieval seal matrix. The reverse has a chamfered edge, and is otherwise plain and flat apart from a broken suspension loop at the top of a raised midrib. There is some damage in the form of a linear removal on the edge. The obverse device consists of a prominent and well rendered fleur-de-lys within a border. The surrounding legend reads: S'[IGILLUM] EN(retrograde)?N?E FIL L WALT'[ER] (...child of Walter). There is another seal matrix on the PAS database that bears the name Enne (genitive of Enna), possibly a mis-spelling of Emma; LEIC-A8D3D0.

A copper alloy, circular seal matrix with hexagonal handle topped with pierced pointed suspension loop. Device of a shield couché (at an angle) bearing a coat of arms; on its upper right-hand corner, a helm. On top of the helm is the crest, a (right) hand clutching a palm of victory, which rests in the lettering area of the matrix, the palm fronds pointing to the right. The arms are quarterly a chevron between three birds and a fess between three crescents. A line, broken by the shield and crest, separates the device from the legend; a complete line runs around the outer edge of the …

A worn medieval cast copper-alloy seal matrix. The matrix seems quite crudely fashioned, with a hexagonally faceted conical handle. The handle is surmounted by a suspension loop with a transverse ridge at its base. The die is of a pointed oval shape. Geake (2001, 62) notes that such a shaped matrix was characteristically used more often by women and clerics. The die depicts the Virgin and Child with foliage at their sides. The figures are surrounded by a linear border and a further border of either lettering or radiating ribs. If it were the former, the now illegible script may have r…

A copper-alloy seal matrix in fine condition. The seal matrix is of the vessica type, with a conical shaped handle on the reverse, pierced for suspension. It measures 46 mm long and 32 mm wide and is 14th century date. The field shows a standing figure holding a crook with a kneeling figure in front. Above them are the head and shoulders of the Madonna and child enclosed within ornate arches. The legend around the central field is somewhat crude, but appears to read 's prioris generalis ord stis heremitiar sti augustini'. Dr Michael Stansfield of Durham University deciphered the legend…

A copper-alloy seal matrix. The matrix has a handle that is circular in section, which expands at the top to a trefoil suspension loop. The base of the matrix is sub-circular in shape and measures 14.8 mm in diameter. It is inscribed with an eye, below which is a heart pierced by two crossing arrows. The inscription on the matrix is probably a pictorial representation of the words 'I Love'. A similar seal matrix was recorded by the PAS in Somerset SOMDOR239, and is dated from 1600 to 1700. It is also similar in style to a number of seal matrices illustrated in Read 'Metal Artefacts of …
