Damaged lead vesica-shaped seal matrix. The matrix has a foliage motif in the centre and an inscription surrounding it reading: S:'AGNETIS FILIE ALAN (Seal of Agnes daughter of Alan). The inscription appears to be complete and the damage at the end of ALAN looks to be where the lead has been split and squashed rather than being missing. The suspension loop on the reverse is missing.

Fragment of a probably lead seal matrix. The object looks to be one quarter of a vessica shaped seal matric. The reverse is flat and plain. The face of the object has an incised line running down the long edge. This is more likely to be a mark caused during the cutting up of the seal rather than decoration, for the line runs through other decorative motifs and the legend surrounding it. The other motifs are uncertain although there appears to be a circle with a pellet in the centre. The legend is difficult to read: there perhaps a G followed by F' A?M. The last letter is probabl…

Unseen, recorded from impression only. Lead, vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, simple cast fleur-de-lys design on reverse, with intact suspension loop. Device: a cross, the vertical limbs being ears of corn, the horizontal plain. Two small subsidiary ears of corn (or stylized iris petals) either side of the top limb. The lower limb is not entirely clear, but appears to have a person standing in front of it, facing left and holding a longbow in front of him. Device separated from legend by a broken line; a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix face. Legend: +S' MARGE…

Substantial lead alloy vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix. Back bears an ornate relief fleur-de-lys, with intact suspension loop at the bottom of the same. Device: in a narrow device area, an 8-pointed star, separated from the legend by a line. Inscription reads + S'IOH'IS: IVSTICE: (The seal of John Justice). Separators are three stacked dots. Measurements: 20 mm x 34 mm, 4 mm thick. This piece's very small device area, together with its simple device, suggest that it may be of a relatively early date in the thirteenth century. The legend does not make it clear is whether th…

Item unseen, description based on photographs and information received. A vesica-shaped) pointed oval) lead seal with flat back and elongated suspension loop above. Device: on a plain ground, what appears to be a curved flowering tendril of four curved leaves and two shoot tips or buds. A fine line separates the letters and the device, and the bottoms of the letters overlay this line rather than resting on it. Measurements: face perhaps 50 mm maximum dimension including top loop.

Incomplete copper alloy vesica shaped seal matrix. The matrix surface is very worn and pitted. There is an incomplete loop on the reverse at one end. The centre of the seal depicts a bird in profile, perhaps a duck. The legend surround it is very worn and unintelligable, perhaps reading: [?SIGILL]VM [? ? ?] G? E? R? E? ?M

(Only impression seen; other details of description from owner) A substantial copper alloy vesica-shaped seal matrix in excellent condition. Reverse plain with raised central midrib and suspension loop at top of same. Device: rather short-legged mule walking from left to right. Seated astride it but with head and upper body turned towards the viewer, the Virgin Mary, holding the Child on her left arm. Her dress reaches the ground and her upper body is disproportionately large, with her head reaching the top of the device area. Below the feet of the mule, in the bottom point of the dev…

Piece unseen, description provided by owner. A lead, vesica-shaped (pointed ova) seal matrix with suspension loop at the top. Device of an elegant fleur-de-lys with two falling and three rising petals, the outer two of the latter with tips curling towards the central rising petal which has been reduced to a straight rod topped by a small fleur-de-lys in the upper point of the device space. The rod continues down the central axis of the vesica and terminates in a matching inverted fleur-de-lys in the bottom point of the central vesica. A single line defines the device space and a second…

A copper alloy, circular seal matrix with rear suspension loop. Device: the head of a clean-shaven man, facing left. He wears a hood, or possibly a coif and a hood over this. The "tail" of the hood is a long-necked bird, indicating that the man represented is a fool or jester. Device separated from the legend by a line; a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix face. Measurements: 16 mm diameter. Inscription reads: * IE SV NV TEL (French: "I am none such" or "I know no such)". 14th century.

A copper alloy oval seal matrix, tapering hexagonal handle terminating in a single collar and a rhomboid suspension loop with circular perforation. Device: at the bottom of the matrix a sleeping lion, head to the left, forelegs hidden under head. Body forms a curve, with the tail forming another curve below. Lion occupies bottom two-thirds of the available device space. Above the lion, two rather indistinct features, probably intended for foliage or fruit; above this, a crown of three points. A copper alloy seal matrix, circular face and hexagonal handle topped by damaged suspension loop, somewhat worn. Device of a long-eared hare riding a creature which is probably meant to be a hunting dog, walking left. The body of the "dog" is almost sheep-like and the head unclear; the legs end in three toes, in a manner not dissimilar to that seen on crude heraldic lions of the period. Hare holds a hunting bow in his paw, which is partially drawn; only the upper part of the bow is visible. Devcice separated from legend by a line. Measurements: 20 mm diameter face, 26 mm high.

Unseen, recorded from impression only. Copper alloy, circular seal matrix, hexagonal handle terminating in suspension loop at top. Device of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). A lamb, facing right, looking back over its shoulder at a staff. The lamb's left foreleg is folded under him as he genuflects. The top of the staff is a cross with flared ends, possibly a cross patonce; below this a three-tailed banner bearing a saltire flies to the left from the staff. Remains of a lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) seal matrix, now in three pieces. Although the matrix is very thin (when new, it would have been 2.5 mm thick, or more) and disintegrating, lettering still legible where present on face; reverse plain. Device : probably a cross between four dots. Device area was originally separated from the legend by a line, and a similar line marked the outer edge of the matrix face. Measurements: 0f pieces placed in their original relationship 21.5 mm x 26 mm, 1.5 mm thick.

A substantial vesica-shaped (pointed oval) lead seal matrix in generally good condition but with a cut in one side due to plough damage. Back has a design of a tree or vine "growing" from the intact suspension loop, four coiled tendrils on each side. Device of a simple eight-pointed "flower" with slim, wedge-shaped petals radiating from a central dot. A line separates the device area from the legend, and a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix face. The legend reads +SIGILL' HINGLESIE (Seal of the Englishman). A copper alloy, circular seal matrix, back with raised tapering midrib, at the top of which lies a neat suspension loop formed by the raised strip of metal which formed the midrib being folded back over itself. Complex device: within a beaded circle, a carefully-executed seated lion with a thick curly mane. Below him a horizontal bar with a snake twisting around it; above the lion's back, a bunch of eight or nine fleurs-de-lys. A raised circle encloses the beaded circle and separates it from the lettering area, which in turn has a beaded circle above and below the letters. The design i…
