A cast copper alloy (gun metal) seal matrix, which has been chip carved. The seal matrix is a flat, circular type. The face of the matrix is also flat and circular. The matrix has been badly damaged presumably by the plough and wear. Much of the edge of the face of the matrix has been removed due to damage and the lug on the reverse has been broken. It dates from the 14th – 15th century (circa 1400 ± 50 years). A similar seal matrix has been recorded from Sussex, PAS database record number: SUSS-B501D1. A seal matrix, with a conical handle. The object was cast in copper alloy, and then the die was chip carved. The handle has six subtle facets and terminates with a round loop pierced by a small circular hole. The hole now contains corroded iron (an iron ring would have once passed through this hole, to allow the seal matrix to be suspended on a chain). The die features a slightly confused legend. A cast copper alloy seal matrix with a conical handle. The handle terminates with a circular suspension loop, which terminates itself with a small knop. The handle tapers down and outwards towards the die. The handle has been decorated with a number of vertical ribs down the length of the handle.
