A vesica-shaped (pointed oval) lead seal matrix, back unseen. Device: A large fish, probably a pike, head pointing upwards its back to the right, belly to the left. A small oval cast silver seal matrix with inset central cornelian intaglio. The intaglio is a reused Roman gem and the figure depicted is probably satyr of a type found incorporated into another medieval seal matrix, from North Walsham, Norfolk (pers. comm. Martin Henig). In both examples the satyr is walking to the right, of classicising style, and is datable to the end of the first century AD (Henig and Heslop 1986, 306). The seal matrix is flat with a stepped profile and at the upper end of the back is a round peirced lug. The legend, which reads clockwise when imprinted, reads SIG…

A small circular copper alloy seal matrix. The conical handle has six subtle facets tapering to a round loop, which is pierced with a 2mm circular hole, for suspension. The legend reads "SUM LEO FORTIS" in Roman style capitals, meaning "I am a strong lion". In the centre of the die is a crude motif of a lion with its tail curling above it. The seal has been cast and the legend chip carved.
This motto is found fairly commonly on ready made seals (Mills 1999, p. 26) and other examples on the PAS database include NMS-0C7ED2 (from Norfolk) and LIN-CCAF20 (from Lincolnshire).
