Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of a copper alloy circular gilded mount with interlace work of Early Early-Medieval date (AD 600 - AD 700). The mount would have been about 68mm in diameter, when complete. It is about 2.5mm thick and weighs 10.41g.
Two small portions of the central part survive and these are decorated with three-stranded Style II animal interlace (part of a foot or paw appears to be present). This representation of an animal was enclosed by a circle of closely spaced repetitive punch marks which are lozenge-shaped and each has a central pellet. The circumferential beaded rim is slightly th…

Late medieval copper alloy mount in the 'black letter' style, the motif of two crossed ?axes lying across a background filled with incised diagonals.
The mount is 'shield shaped', in that it is roughly square with two neighbouring rounded corners. It measures 22.5mm long and 20.5mm wide, and weighs 4.53g. It is 1.75mm thick.
The reverse is flat with traces of solder and ?organic remains. Perhaps this was attached to a belt or wooden box?
The crossed ?axes may have represented a family. Possibly they were also to represent the letter M, although the handles of the ?axes being so long it…

Copper alloy stud-like mount. The mount is circular, has moulded decoration on the upper surface and a flat reverse so that it is slightly D-shaped in section. Four knops are arranged around the outside edge. There are two rounded knops opposite each other and two larger tri-lobed knops also opposite each other at ninety degrees to the smaller rounded knops. There is a plain border, broken by the knops, and a second border comprised of a series of small moulded ovals. Measures 30x15mm and weighs 4.38g.

Rather worn and possibly incomplete copper alloy post medieval mount. If incomplete, it was probably 'bow tie' shaped.
It has one rounded end (11mm wide) with the remains of a lug at the centre of the reverse. The mount narrows then expands again to a ?break - the lug on the reverse is at the edge, which appears jagged though it is very worn. No original patina survives.
Measures 18x11x1.5mm and weighs 1.01g

Copper alloy diamond-shaped mount, measuring 25x22x1mm and weighing 2.82g. It has a loop on the reverse that appears to have been soldered on.
The front is decorated with tiny U-shaped punches flanking the edges and in a X through the middle. This results in four diamond-shaped segments. In the two that attach to the loop, the ends of the loop can be seen.
Probably late medieval/ post medieval in date.

Roman mount in the form of a bird. It is well made and rather stylised - the only decoration being linear grooves to define the wings (four diagonal either side of a central vertical and beneath a short horizontal) and head (two diagonal either side of a central vertical).
In shape the mount has a bifurcated tail extending from the rounded breast of the bird. Beyond this the neck is slender extending into a rounded, D-sectioned head which is flat at its end where the beak extends, slightly smaller in section to give the impression of size difference. The beak is triangular in section…

Late medieval copper alloy mount, the face of which is 17x11x2mm with a 3mm long (slightly bent) shank at the reverse. It weighs 1.92g.
The face is in the shape of a V with a single projection between its arms and to their outer edges a shorter projection extending downwards. The central projection is decorated with several vertical incised lines. At the base of the V and slightly to one side two intentional triangular cuts have been made. This could give the appearance of the letter W. Alternatively it could depict a bird in flight.

Medieval copper unidentified object, probably some kind of mount and ??possibly unfinished, or even a practice piece.
It measures c.52x15x0.2mm and weighs 3.11g. One long edge has been damaged relatively recently while the other is serrated along two thirds of its length (the remaining third is unaltered). At the centre, but slightly nearer to the serrated edge, is a 2mm diameter piercing. Running along most of this central axis but to the other side of the piercing are some not very well constructed repoussee dots (they are not immediately obvious).
At the short edges one appears to h…

Medieval copper alloy belt mount or sheet spangle, apparantly unpierced. It is square in shape, the edges slightly damaged and measuring c.16x16mm. The edge appears frilled in places, although this could equally be wear.
The repousse decoration consits of four 3mm diameter circles in the four quadrants created by a cross, within a square. On the reverse the surface is very grey, the hollow reverses of the repousse decoration being filled with a ?concretion. Perhaps reflecting to what it was attached, or how it was attached??
Weighs 0.52g.

Incomplete copper alloy post medieval mount, missing most of a separate attachment rivet.
The middle section is roughly pointed oval in shape, thicker towards on end where, beyond a 1.5mm thick rib, a circular projection extends. This has iron staining on both sides, to the reverse with remains of a rivet. To the other end of the central decoration, after a 1mm thick rib, a shorter triangular projection extends.
The mount is 30mm long by max.9mm wide, hollowed on the reverse of the central and pierced section, and c.2mm thick. It weighs 2.83g.
