A damaged and incomplete lead plaque of uncertain date. The object has been cast and would probably originally have depicted a classical style bust. It may be Roman in date or may be a much later decorative plaque from a funerary monument or garden ornament. Only the head-dress now survives. It is elaborate in design, with a pointed crown-like base and a scallop-shaped or acanthus leaf portion above. Extending from the left hand side (as you look at it) is a feather-like protrusion (now bent). It is likely that a similiar protrusion originally existed on the opposite side also.…

Roman cast copper alloy mount in the form of a human head wearing a radiate crown with seven spikes - probably the sun god Sol. Very corroded with little detail discernible. The cheeks and chin are prominent. The reverse of the mount is hollow cast, and there is what appears to be a lead based solder within. Small areas of orange-brown patina, the exposed metal is brown-red. Probably 3rd or 4th century. Length 32.80mm, width 29.94mm, thickness 10.56mm, weight 15.43g.

A small bust, probably representing the head and shoulders of Cupid, emerging from a calyx. The hair has a ‘crest’ on the crown of the head and the rest of the hair is full and wavy, the eyes are well-defined and hollows at their centre suggest that the pupils must originally have held inlaid settings. The face is full, the nose quite broad and the mouth is closed. The reverse is hollow with traces of lead within it. This object is probably a mount from a vessel. The bust is 31mm long, 22.5mm wide and 14mm thick.

Fragment of cast copper-alloy Roman 'propeller-shaped' mount or belt stiffener. The fragment represents one of the flat triangular ends of the mount. One point of the triangle shows the straight break where it has become detached from the rest of the object; the break is worn, suggesting it occurred in antiquity. The front is decorated with a central raised longitudinal rib. A ring-and-dot motif is punched into each of the complete corners. There are two rivet holes, one to either side of the rib, complete with their copper-alloy rivets. The reverse of the fragment is undecorated. The …

A copper-alloy mount which could be Roman or later in date. It is circular in shape with an integral rectangular loop projecting from the centre of the back face. It measures 22.5mm in diameter and the front face has two concentric circular grooves and a small circular knop in its centre. The back face is hollow. The copper-alloy is very silvery grey in colour which is unusual, this may be due to a high tin or lead content or possibly due to a surface coating, small patches of green corrosion products show through this surface colouration. There is a grey mass adhering to the back…

Cast copper alloy mount of a human face. The mount is of a head only, no shoulders or neck are present. The worn face with sunken eyes and a rounded nose is bordered by short or pulled back hair. Some of the original copper-alloy patina shows through the layer of dark green corrosion. Identified from photograph, the figurine was descriped as a mount by the finder. The photograph only depicts the front of the mount, there is no image of the reverse to see the mount fittings. Head mounts were used by the Romans to decorate vessels. The mount measures 27mm in length and is 21mm wide.

The object is a cast copper alloy mount in the form of a bird. The bird appears to be seated, as no legs are visible. The overall shape is similar to that of a duck swimming. The bird is stylised with its’ beak have a sub-lozenge shape in section leading to a rounded head with no further definition. The moulding suggests the bird has a long neck. The body is a sub–pointed oval in plan, and is semi-circular in section which tapers in depth towards the tail. The body has a double-stranded low-relief ‘X’ defining the wings. The tail is forming by a triangular block at the terminal…

A fragment from a possible Roman mount, possibly from an item of furniture such as a box or casket. The mount is circular with a domed front and a flat reverse. It is incomplete but measures around 14.2 mm in diameter. It is impossible to say with any certainty that this is indeed such an artefact, though similar artefacts are illustrated in Crummy (1983, 87; 91). The patina on the object also suggests a Roman date.

A lead mount of possible Roman or post-medieval (Renaissance period) date. The object depicts the head of a classical style god or goddess. The face is that of a youthful male or female looking straight ahead. The features are three dimensional and stand proud of the convex face. The eyes, mouth and nose are clearly depicted and the deity wears an elaborate head-dress, which comes to a point at the centre and appears to have a floral element and a string of beads just above the level of the ears. A scarf-like section of the head-dress extends down each side of the face and under the ch…

A slightly worn cast copper-alloy mount. The mount is flat lozengiform in shape with a pair of opposed circular perforations in the vertices. The patina suggests that this object is of a certain antiquity, although whether it is Roman or medieval in date is difficult to say. Similarly, it is hard to say whether this was a dress fitting or a furniture mount, for example from a box.

Cast copper alloy oval belt stud with a stylised vulva in the centre of the convex upper face. There are two circular-sectioned integral studs on the reverse for attachement to the strap. There are two broken integral lugs below for suspension of a pendant. Similar mounts of this type with an integral suspension loop for hanging a pendant at the base have been found both on the continent and in Britain. An example of such a find comes from Niederbieber, now in the Landesmuseum, Bonn, and dated from the mid 2nd century to circa AD 260 (Oldenstein 1976, 137, 138, Taf. 34, no. 268); ano…

A Roman copper alloy lunular mount (43 – 410 AD). The mount is crescentic in plan with a semi-circular cross-section – the front of the mount is convex and the reverse is flat. The mount is undecorated. On the reverse at the mid-point of the crescent is a single spike. The spike is angled downwards but that is probably due to wear/damage. Rough grey green patina. Dimensions: length: 17.20mm; width: 13.66mm; thickness: 9.23mm; weight: 1.95g.

A worn cast copper-alloy mount, probably dating to the Roman period. The object is conical, with a large circular border and a significant knob at the apex. The centre of the reverse is slightly concave, either side of which is a lug of rectangular section, presumably for attachment. Whether this object was attached to an item of furniture or an article such as a horse harness is uncertain. The attribution of a Roman date is based upon the artefact's patina as well as the large amount of Roman material found in the vicinity.
