An Iron Age copper alloy decorative mount, probably of mid to late 1st century AD date. The perforated copper alloy mount or escutcheon is probably from a vessel. The mount is likely to be complete with a length of 23.05mm, a width of 15.89mm and a depth of 21.45mm. The sides of the mount are flat and converge towards the ‘beaked’ end. A circular perforation with a diameter of 6.6 - 7.6mm penetrates both sides near their top. A smaller perforation with a diameter of 5.0mm meets the first opening from below. The base of the mount has an integral circular pin, presumably for attachm…

Cast copper alloy mount, probably Late Iron Age or Early Roman. The mount is subrectangular in plan and teardrop shaped in section. It is pierced through its width with a circular perforation. Viewed with the pointed end down, the mount is moulded so that each outside edge is raised and slightly flared out. Between the raised edges at the top of the mount is a central raised triangle, recessed to take red glass or enamel, of which some traces survive. The downward point of the triangle extends into a substantial raised bevelled line that continues around the circumference of t…

A copper-alloy fragment of a probable Iron Age strap fitting or mount, perhaps most likely to have functioned as a harness mount. The fragment is flat and has a rectangular shaped part, with the beginning of a central split surviving, and this flares into a triangular shaped part which is also incomplete due to old breaks. The fragment measures 25.6mm in surviving length and 38mm in width across its widest part. The front face is decorated with four circular indentations which originally held enamel, indeed traces of a red enamel can be seen within the indentations. Two of…

A copper-alloy mount or belt mount. The mount is roughly square with blunted corners and a raised central element. This raised element is in the shape of a face, the stylised eyes, nose and mouth are clearly visible. The reverse is concave with the face area being hollow. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour and it is pitted. The mount could possibly be late Iron Age or Roman, but a later medieval date cannot be ruled out.

Iron age or Roman copper alloy mount, 35mm long, 28mm wide and 9mm thick. It consists of a small cirular protrusion which is sub spherical in section. This is decorated in teh form of a human head with small round eyes, a triangular noes and traces of a mouth. This sits above a large sub-circular form which is slightly domed with a flat reverse. This has two small spherical protrusions forming stylised breasts. The object is probably a mount from a vessel and its form suggest that the head would have sat above the rim of the vessel.

Cast copper alloy mount. The mount is semicircular in plan and flat in section. When viewed with the straight edge upper most, the front face is decorated with a raised design of two left chasing spirals that extend into the curved field. Alternatively it could also be described as an incised overly curled ‘S’ shape viewed horizontally on its back. Around the spirals, the field of the mount is recessed, possibly to hold enamel. There are no traces of additional material to confirm or deny this theory. The reverse of the mount is unevenly tinned and this extends onto the edges of th…

Romano-Celtic copper alloy zoomorphic mount in the form of a bull. The mount is formed of a flat shape for the head and neck of the beast and two semi-circular sectioned horns coming from the head set at a right angle to it. The horns curve upwards in an arc which forms an almost complete circle. They terminate in a round knop although one has broken off. The mount bears some similarities to the terminals found on late Iron age and Roman cosmetic sets (pestle and mortars), although it is larger and narrower than this so is unlikely to be from this instrument. A good example showin…

An interesting cast copper-alloy Iron Age object, probably a fitting or mount of some type, although a parallel is yet to be found. The object is a hollow chevron shaped tube, 50 mm in length. Within the tube the remains of another copper-alloy bar or tube can be discerned. The item is decorated with two opposing birds on the top. The front has three circular grooves, each surrounded by a circular ridge. Within the central of these grooves is what appears to be the remains of a shell inlay. It is therefore likely that the other two grooves also had inlays of some sort. The rear of the …

The object is a rectangular copper-alloy cast mount with a convex surface and hollow inside. The surface is decorated with an inlay of stripes of blue and red enamel. The stripes do not seem to appear in any particular pattern. The concave back is hollow except for a centrally placed short stud which was most probably meant to be pushed into the leather of a belt or a broad strap. The object is here described as a Romano-British mount, because of the shape and the red/blue enamel inlay; however, no immediate parallels could be found so far.

Iron age or Early Roman, circular, enamelled disc with a central rectangular hole (9x4mm). The enamelled decoration is of an unusual and assymetrical design, with four large areas of (now green) enamel and four smaller areas of red enamel. The reverse is plain and theree is no sign of attachment anywhere on the piece. The rectangular slot might suggest that the object is part of a dagger or sword handle?

The object appears to be an Iron Age mount, made from cast copper alloy with an iron fixing stud. In plan the mount is triangular, with relief decoration on one face. The decoration is moulded, and has a central circular boss, which stands proud from the rest of the mount. This central boss has the terminal of the iron stud visible, but the stud is flush with the boss. Surrounding the central boss are three high-relief crescents with deep fields either side, forming an inner circle. The corners of the mount have two elongated crescentic shapes which meet at the inner circle of cr…

Cast copper alloy scabbard mount with squared off upper section and lower section tapering to a point. Two rivets remain at the top of the mount and two others remain on the left side of the mount as part of a group of four within the decoration. The two rivets on the right side of this group are missing. These rivets would have attached to a hide cover for a wooden scabbard which may have also been lined. The mount is 55 mm long, 35 mm wide and 1.7 mm in thickness. It weighs 16.77 g. A typical Iron Age sword is 35mm in width, so the scabbard would have been wider. This object is d…
