A cast copper alloy forked 'pitchfork' tongue (pin) from an 18th century shoe buckle. The tongue has a hollow cylinder at one side which would have pivoted on the iron spindle through the middle of the buckle frame; from the cylinder rise two sharp points which went through the strap being buckled. The artefact is a mid greyish-green colour, the surface is slightly pitted. Large shoe buckles with seperate chapes were fashionable from c.1720 to 1790 AD.
