Copper alloy decorative object, possibly the outer edge of a buckle of Early Medieval/Medieval date. The object is curved, with the lower edge being slightly longer than the upper edge so that the object is also angled back from the lower edge and the reverse is concave. There is a plain border along the upper and lower edges between which there is moulded openwork decoration. The decoration comprises two opposing zoomorphic creatures of uncertain type. They face one another with their heads turned away from the object so that their necks meet behind the heads. The faces are worn,…

A cast copper-alloy square buckle plate. Only the upper plate survives, and is broken off at the fold. The plate is recessed for the frame and appears to have had a pin slot, although this is not clear due to the break. The main section of the frame is dominated by a large rectangular recessed area with moulded decoration within in the form of a figure moving left and looking back. The figure holds a shield, probably a kite shield, and a weapon which appears to be singled edged and is therefore probably a falcheon. Compare an example found in Winchester (Biddle 1990, 520, no. 1201)

Copper alloy buckle of Medieval date. The frame is generally oval, with an elaborate outer edge. The sides of the buckle are convex and generally oval in section. The outer edge is thickened and straight. The upper surface is convex and the reverse is generally flat so that it is D-shaped in section. Although heavily worn a series of lateral incised grooves can be distinguished on the upper surface. The bar is narrowed and offset and is generally circular in section. The copper alloy wire pin is bent around the bar, where it is rectangular in section, then tapers becoming circ…

Cast copper alloy buckle pin of Medieval date. The loop is generally rectangular in section and forms a slight knop on the inside edge at the junction with the shaft. The loop tapers slightly from the junction with the shaft and the end is broken off (W. 4.57-3.5mm. Th. 4.1-2.13mm). There is a raised rectangular element with irregular incised cross-hatched decoration on the upper surface of the shaft at the junction with the loop. The shaft is also rectangular in section and tapers from the junction with the loop. The end of the shaft is slightly hollowed on the reverse. Dark patina.

Copper alloy sub-rectangular buckle plate. The plate has frame recesses and has a pin slot. Both hinge loops are broken where they fold over. The upper plate tapers gently from the hinge end and is broken off at the attachment end (L. 31.3mm. W. 12.03-10.4mm. Th. 0.95mm). The lower plate is much narrower and shorter than the upper plate with irregular sides, and is broken off at approximately half the length of the upper plate (L. 20mm. W. 8.8mm. Th. 0.8mm). There are three clear rivet holes in both plates. Two are arranged laterally close to the hinge end, each retaining the…

Copper alloy oval looped buckle with integral plate. The outer edge of the frame expands to form a point. The reverse of the frame is flat and the upper surface is slightly convex so that it is generally D-shaped in section. From the junction with the frame the plate has two expanded and slightly thickened sections with convex edges divided by a shallow lateral groove, the second being slightly narrower than the first. The plate then narrows to form a tapering long sub-rectangular element before expanding again to form an oval terminal. There is a slightly raised lateral ridge bef…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame. The pin bar extends beyond the edges in the lobes; the pin has been lost. The frame is slightly bevelled both internally and externally, whilst the reverse is fairly flat. The upper face is decorated with a cast rosette. In profile, the lobe appears to bend upwards as a result of old damage. The style of the buckle is quite common and tends to be from the second half of the sixteenth century. Examples of this style can be found in Crummy (1988, 17; ref. 1758) and Margeson (1993, 31; ref. 174).
