An almost complete cast copper-alloy Roman headstud brooch. The head conceals a tubluar casting with a hinged pin mechanism. The copper-alloy pin is bent to one side and broken halfway down the shaft. The copper-alloy axis bar also forms the swivelling wire chain above the head. The rectangular neck band on the chain loop is decorated with a frontal panel of four vertical rows of opposing triangle enamel cells, some of which still remain the red enamel. Both the wings are decorated with a vertical panel of three copper-alloy lozenges with traces of red enamel around the edge. The actua…

Complete cast copper alloy one piece Roman bow brooch of 1st century AD date. The brooch is worn has some slight pitting towards the base of the bow. It has a dull copper-brown patina, with slight corrosion on the spring and pin. It is possibly a variant of the Hod Hill type, which would date the brooch to 60-70AD (Hattatt 1987, p76). However, the brooch does not have any direct parallels in this class. It is more likely that the brooch is an example or variation of the continental 'Kraftig-profilierte' type. A brooch of a similar design can be seen in Crummy 1987, p10 no 37. The shap…

The brooch measures 44mm long and 8mm wi…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Romano-British Aesica brooch. The wings of the brooch are partially obscured by corrosion product, but appear to be tubular. The pin appears to be hinged, and the pin bar and a tiny fragment of pin shaft survive. The head of the brooch is subtriangular in plan and flat in section. It is bent at 90 degrees to the bow of the brooch, but this bend may have occurred after loss, rather than being deliberate, as the pin shaft would not comfortably connect with the hinge in its current position. The bow of the brooch is formed from an integral circular disc, also …
