A copper-alloy incomplete possible brooch frame. It is flat and oval shaped 23mm by 29mm in size externally, formed of a rectangular strip of copper-alloy, which is 3.8mm in width. One face has traces of decoration of some kind possibly lettering. Unfortunately as only roughly half of this possible brooch frame survives and there is no evidence of a pin constriction, or any other diagnostic features it can not be identified with any certainty.

Possible fragment from a cast copper alloy Roman brooch of unknown type. What remains is the spring, which consists of a cast copper alloy axis bar which is sub-oval in section. Directly underneath the main axis bar is a shorter copper bar, which was possibly used as a wedge to make the axis bar and the spring fit tighter together. The spring is formed from a strip of cast copper alloy, approximately 2mm in dimaeter being coiled both bars. Two complate turns still remain. The length of the object along the axis bar is 16.5mm, the width of the spring is 9.7mm, and the weight is 2.29g.

The object is an incomplete Trumpet Brooch which dates to the 1st to 2nd century AD. It is made of cast copper alloy and is incomplete.
The head of the object is sub-circular in shape while the reverse of the head is flat. On the reverse of the head on the upper part is a single central lug which would have been used to hold the now missing axis bar. Directly below the lug, again on the reverse of the head is a central downward facing protrusion. According to Hattatt (Hattatt, R 1987. Brooches of Antiquity. Oxbow: Oxford, p.128) the protrusion was used to hold the …

The object is a Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type), cf Mackreth 2011, 4.a-b. Plate 46. The brooch is made from cast copper alloy and is incomplete.
Looking at the front of the brooch in plan, the brooch has short semi-cylindrical wings with caps on each end. The wings and the caps have both been damaged and are incomplete (not recent breaks). Grooves in what is left of the caps, indicates where the perforations used to support the axis bar would have been. The axis bar, the spring and the pin are now missing. The bow head is slightly humped. In the centre of the…

Anglo-Saxon square headed brooch bow? 29mm long and 25mm wide. The object is in a poor condition and has a dark green/black patina which may result from burning? The object is 5mm thick and weighs 17.17grams. It appears plain apart from a raised border, 4mm thick, on three sides. The object is curved almost 90o with one edge flattening out on the reverse where it would join the headplate. Part of a 1st century Roman plate brooch, dating from AD50-150. It is cast from copper alloy and is decorated with coloured enamel. The front of the brooch has a small circular hole at the centre where there would have originally been a protruding knop - this may have been cast separately and therefore has been lost from the brooch. The decoration on the brooch is in the shape of a sun with radiating curved arms. It is similar to the 'leaf garland' decoration found on similar early plate brooches from France (as cited in Hattatt 'Ancient Brooches and other Objects'). The enamel in the…

Copper alloy plate brooch, cast in the shape of an elongated bow. The brooch is complete with a copper alloy hinged pin and catchplate on the reverse. The surface of the brooch is highly corroded with traces of silvering or tinning on the front. The front of the brooch also has red-orange enamel, however there are no raised fields in which the enamel would have been contained. The design on the front of the brooch is unclear due to the level of corrosion. The reverse of the brooch is almost completely black in colour, with a small amount of copper showing through. An incomplete cast copper alloy T-shaped brooch, probably dating from the 1st century AD. The measurement across the cylindrical wings is 28.29mm and they have a diameter of 5.35mm. The wings house the access bar for a hinged pin, which is missing. A 28.29mm length of the bow survives, which tapers towards the missing foot. The object is quite worn, but there is some surviving decoration. It consists of a raised longitudinal ridge running down the centre of the object, 1.8mm in width, which has traces of curving transverse lines. This gives the impression of a scale-like pattern. Early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy supporting-arm brooch. This brooch was previously recorded on this database as an "unknown type" late Roman bow brooch. The original discription of the object has been kept below:
The head of the brooch is formed from a semicylindrical spring case, that is essentially a flat, rectangular panel capped at either end with circular plates with a circular perforation to both. The rectangular panel is decorated to the front with two horizontal incised lines. Nothing of the spring or pin survives. The bow of the brooch humps from the spring case with a subci…

An incomplete cast copper alloy T-shaped brooch, probably dating from the 1st century AD. The cylindrical wings measure 32.32mm and have a diameter of 5.5mm. They house the access bar for a hinged pin, the head of which survives. Towards the end of the right wing there are two incised parallel lines. The (shorter) left wing appears to have broken off at this point, suggesting that the wings were formerly closer to 35mm in total length. The bow, although broken part way down, appears to have been shorter than the wings, judging by the angle of its curve. It narrows slightly towards the …
