A Roman brooch of 'fantail' type; in two pieces, now glued together. The brooch, which has slight traces of tinned surfaces, has a hinged pin, most of which is missing. On either side of the fan-shaped bow is a pair of flat ribs decorated with notches. On the shoulder of the bow is a linear group of four incised rings and dots. Curiously, there are no traces of a catchplate on the reverse of the bow, nor any indication of its former presence.

The lozenge-shaped foot plate has a single conical extension, also with grooves. The bow also has extensive grooves on its face. On the back is the remains of an iron pin; the catchplate is only partially preserved. The grey colour of the brooch suggests a high tin content.

A cast copper alloy, gilded Anglo-Saxon button brooch. The brooch has an angular rim, which is slightly damaged. The brooch is otherwise flat and circular (maximum diameter 20.09mm). The brooch depicts two incised circles, just inside the rim. Inside the circle there is a depiction of a stylised head, the head could be anthropomorphic. The shapes which make up the face are all raised. The face has been very highly stylised, almost to the point where it no long resembles a face. An exact parallel for the face could not be found in Avent and Evison's typology, but it is similar to examp…

An unusual example of an incomplete cast copper alloy Romano-British brooch, possibly a Nauheim derivative. The brooch does not have any wings, as one would expect from a one piece Nauheim derivative. The head of the brooch would normally be the coiled wire forming the spring coils, spring chord and pin, however nothing of these elements remains. Instead the head of the brooch is simply the narrowed top of the bow. Unusually this top portion of the bow is flattened to either side, forming a single lug, with a circular piercing. This implies that the pin chord passed through the piercin…
