The object is a fragment of a Roman brooch. It is made from cast copper alloy. What remains of the brooch is the lower portion of the bow. The bow is broken just above a simplistic acanthus. In profile, the bow is straight. The bow is slightly domed in section, and after some initial tapering below the acanthus, then has a steady width until it reaches the bow foot. The lower portion of the bow is undecorated. On the reverse of the bow is an incomplete solid catchplate. The surface is slightly abraded but has a light grey/green coloured patina. The brooch measures 44mm long and 8mm wi…

The object is a cast copper possible composite brooch fragment. The brooch is formed by a semi-circular frame. The upper surface is decorated with bulbous knops, which are not integral to the frame. On the reverse of the frame, holes with flattened studs from the knops are visible. The upper surface of the frame is otherwise undecorated, except for traces of gilding. The frame is semi-circular in plan, and it is not certain whether the terminals are complete or not. One terminal has obliquely angled edges as if it has been cut. However, the object then has no obvious form of mounting …

The object is a fragment of a brooch. It is made from cast copper alloy. The upper portion of the brooch is a sub-square shape in plan, however the upper and left-hand vertical edge are abraded, the right-hand vertical edge is less abraded. The outer face of this portion is undecorated. On the reverse, towards the lower edge is an integral lug, which is a rectangular shape, with the vertical edge being broken. This edge has an incomplete hole in the centre. Around this lug is iron corrosion, suggesting the pin was originally made from iron. Protruding and integral to the lower edge of…

The brooch is a Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, Western Group, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 5.a2. a. Plate 49. It is made from cast copper alloy. The wings of the brooch are semi-cylindrical. The only decoration on the wings is the terminals are narrowed. The wings terminate with a wing cap, both of which are incomplete.
