Incomplete copper alloy ‘Wessex type La Tène I’, one piece Iron Age brooch. The head of the brooch is now missing, but would once have comprised of an integral four-coil springhead that would have then extended into the pin shaft. All that remains is the bow of the brooch, which is distinctively arched with a squared C shape profile. It is domed in section, having a slightly flatter reverse, and tapers to either end. A downward turned knop at one end is all that remains of the foot, now heavily worn, but with a tiny fragment of the upper catchplate attached. Hattatt, 1985, Iron Ag

An unusual example of an incomplete cast copper alloy Romano-British brooch, possibly a Nauheim derivative. The brooch does not have any wings, as one would expect from a one piece Nauheim derivative. The head of the brooch would normally be the coiled wire forming the spring coils, spring chord and pin, however nothing of these elements remains. Instead the head of the brooch is simply the narrowed top of the bow. Unusually this top portion of the bow is flattened to either side, forming a single lug, with a circular piercing. This implies that the pin chord passed through the piercin…

Cast, copper alloy bow brooch of very late Iron Age or early Roman date. Langton Down type. At the head are the wings, which have been made by folding over strips of copper alloy from the very top of the brooch and also from slightly below (behind the bow) to form a single cylindrical housing. Inside are the coils of the sprung pin, which exits the wings through a notch cut at the back where the two strips of metal overlap. The pin is round sectioned and tapers to a point. The bow is offset from the wings on a short, rectangular projection with a rib along the top of it. The bow is fl…

A composite Colchester-type brooch of very late Iron Age date. The surviving brooch comprises five parts; the missing spring and pin being the sixth. The largest part is the bow and side wings; the latter appear to have been spread out to their present position and on their inside faces there is evidence for the attachment of the spring in the form of small patches of possible solder, or its former position. On the underside of the bow is a hollow groove which extends along the whole length of the bow. Within this has been inserted a separate catchplate, and this still slides…

The object is an incomplete brooch of Langton Down type. It is thought to date to the late Iron Age to early Roman period or 1st Century AD. The brooch is made from cast copper alloy. As an example Hattatt (Hattatt, R 1987. Brooches of Antiquity. The head of the brooch comprises of a cylindrical spring cover. The only openings in the cover are at each end and through a slit on the reverse of the cover. Parts of the cover are…

An incomplete wrought copper-alloy Iron Age La Tène III Nauheim derivative brooch dating to the 1st century BC/AD. Typical of this one-piece brooch type the chord is internal, although the spring coils are difficult to discern (see notes, below). The pin would have been formed by the continuation of this coil; it is therefore now missing. The bow is oval in profile and tapers towards the foot, its sides flattening as it narrows. It extends into the catchplate which survives well. The brooch is undecorated.
