A complete heavily clipped struck/ hammered silver contemporary fake penny, dating to the 15th century AD (diameter: 13.3mm; thickness: 0.2mm; weight: 0.37g). Minted in York, this coin was intended to be produced as a clipped penny, possibly for it to mix with other regulated coinage at the time. The coin is in a worn and poor condition.

Silver penny of either Richard II or Henry IV. 1377-1413. The coin is badly worn and the majority of the legend on both faces is lost. It is likely that this coin was minted in York due to the quatrefoil on the reverse.

A total of 12 coins, consisting of Viking, Saxon and Arabic issues, found between 1992 and 2000. Only 3 were found together and considered Treasure, the others were single finds. When viewed together the coins obviously constituted an important mixed coin hoard, the most southerly yet found, deposited around 923-925. "Their presence shows that a bullion economy still operated in some sections of society in the Danelaw as late as the 920's. What is still more significant is that this hoard should have been deposited so close to Leicester, five or more years after control of the town…
