Rim sherd of a thin walled (thick rimmed) Midlands Purple Ware pottery vessel, probably a jug or storage jar of post medieval date (1600 – 1700). This sherd is worn and probably comes from the rim of either a storage jar or cooking pot. The fabric of the sherds is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit, quartz, and broken burnt pottery inclusions. There is also a high proportion of sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid grey purple and the inner and outer surfaces of both sherds are a mottled grey. Rim sherd of a thick walled platter or bowl probably dating from the post medieval period (1550-1650). The sherd is irregular in plan and curved in profile. The fabric is a hard fired earthen ware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, sand and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is two-tone, the outer a mid orange brown and the inner a mid grey. This two-tone effect has been caused by low temperatures within the kiln and is typical of this type of post medieval pottery. The exterior and possibly the interior surface has a light-mid green (copper?) shiny glaze (also know…
