A rim sherd from a Roman greyware vessel. In section it takes the form of an apostrophe. As such it seems similar to a number of mortaria rims sherds illustrated in Laing (2003, 63-65). Inclusions in the fabric of the pottery together with its profile thus suggest that this fragment might once have formed part of the rim of a Roman mortarium, or food preparation bowl. Further, the hooked style would indicate a 2nd- or 3rd-century date for this sherd.

Three sherds from a Roman greyware vessel. They are all angular base sherds and weigh 119g, 87g, and 38g respectively. The largest has a maximum length of 112.3mm, and width of 100.3mm. The middle sheard has a maximum length of 93.2mm, and width of 65.6mm. The smallest has a maximum length of 79.7mm, and width of 35.6mm. Collectively they form the majority of the base of an incomplete vessel. This base would have had a thickness of 9mm in its centre, rising to 12.7mm at the point where the sides begin. The sides themselves taper as they travel away from the base. The base would…

An almost complete carinated urn or jar from the late Iron Age or early Roman period, dating from circa 25 BC to circa 60 AD. The vessel is wheel thrown and is tempered with small calcite grog, and possible shell inclusions. It is unfortunately missing its base. The vessel is 130 mm in diameter at its opening and 98 mm in diameter at what remains of the base. The vessel stands 106 mm high without its missing base. The exterior is decorated with lateral channels and ridges created by trailing a tool over the vessel whilst it was spinning on the wheel.

A trio of pottery sherds probably from three seperate Roman greyware vessels found in the same vicinity. The first takes the form of an apostrophe in section. As such it seems similar to a number of mortaria rims sherds illustrated in Laing (2003, 63-65). Mica and other inclusions in the fabric of the pottery, together with its profile thus suggest that this fragment might once have formed part of the rim of a Roman mortarium, or food preparation bowl. A worn red-orange rim/body sherd from a wheel made Roman samian bowl probably dating to the 2nd century AD. The fragment is plain with a beaded lip and curved wall. There is an external offset, indicating the junction of the wall and the floor, while the interior curves smoothly. There are two faint circumferential incisions below the lip. There are also specks of (modern) blue paint on the exterior of the sherd. Probably samian form 18/31 or 31 of probable Central Gaulish provenance.
