A worn cast lead vessel which has been crushed out of its original form. It is of open form and semicircular section, intended to lean against (or be attached to) a vertical surface. The vessel flares out as its sides ascend; the flaring is more pronounced above a pair of longitudinal lines around two-thirds up the vessel's side. The lines are moulded in low relief. At the base the vessel is 41.9mm in length, expanding to 76.9mm at the top. The majority of the surface of the vessel is covered with off-white corrosion product. As stated, the vessel has buckled at the back and it has al…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn fragment from a cast lead cloth seal dating to the post-medieval period or later. Due to its limited survival it is impossible to state which type of seal this object is, although it is likely that it was a two-disc type with a folded connecting strip between the two discs. The obverse face of this disc bears a raised letter 'H'? within a ?lozengiform border. Such a personal clothiers'/weavers'/searchers' seal is very difficult to date precisely and could come from any time between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. It has suffered a number of fractures and a break as a res…

A vesica-shaped (pointed oval) lead seal matrix, back unseen. Device appears to be a version of the alchemical symbol for antimony or alum, consisting of two opposed sets of three branches joined by a central line. The upper set has curved outer arms, rather like a candelabrum, pointing upwards; the lower trio point down, and are shaped like a trident with curved tines. Device is separated from legend by a shaky groove; a similar line marks the outer edge of the matrix face. Inscription reads +SIGILL WMLTERI ALCh' (Seal of Walter Alch). There is a line across the LL of SIGILL indicati…

A cast lead vesica-shaped (pointed oval) medieval seal matrix. The reverse has a chamfered edge, and is otherwise plain and flat apart from a broken suspension loop at the top of a raised midrib. There is some damage in the form of a linear removal on the edge. The obverse device consists of a prominent and well rendered fleur-de-lys within a border. The surrounding legend reads: S'[IGILLUM] EN(retrograde)?N?E FIL L WALT'[ER] (...child of Walter). There is another seal matrix on the PAS database that bears the name Enne (genitive of Enna), possibly a mis-spelling of Emma; LEIC-A8D3D0.

A worn biconical cast lead weight with flattish top and base; one cone is a lot shallower than the other. It probably dates from the medieval or post-medieval periods.

A cast lead weight of shallow biconical form of possible medieval date. The weight features a central perforation (D: 4.9mm) which runs the length of the object. The weight is worn and pitted. Bailey (1995, 29) suggests that weights of this form, often found in rural areas, could be net weights used to catch rabbits or birds.

A very crude worn cast lead artefact probably used as a weight, possibly as a spindle whorl. The object is oval in plan and plano-convex with a recessed reverse. It features a central perforation, triangular with rounded corners in shape, which expands towards the base. Such an undiagnostic object could date from the Roman period onwards. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1…

A cast lead weight in the shape of a frustum, or truncated cone. At its base the weight is 22.1mm in diameter, while it is 12.2mm in diameter at the top. It has a hole running right through its centre; the hole tapers towards the top. On the base there is a broadly circular groove running between the hole and the circumference. The weight is worn and scarred. There is a possibility that it might have acted as a Roman steelyard weight.

A worn, irregular lead plug for the repair of a damaged vessel. The plug has a groove where it was fitted to the wall of the broken vessel. There are some linear markings on the smaller, outer face of the plug which may possibly be a linen print. Such plugs were in use from at least the Roman period until the post-medieval period, and without the presence of a pottery sherd are almost impossible to date closely.

A broken, worn cast lead figure, possibly a late medieval pilgrim souvenir. The fragment is anthropomorphic and is decorated bifacially. It appears to be suited in the pointed helmet and armour of a medieval knight. As the finder suggests this could be a representation of a St George, images of whom can be found in Spencer (1990, 83; refs. 148-150). The arms appear to be bent in a posture characteristic of St George holding a spear, with one arm raised and the other bent round to grasp the spear towards its tip. In this example the arm is certainly bent round holding what appears …

At the broken shorter edge there are transverse lines which are particularly evident on the obverse face. As the finder suggests, this could be a representation of a purse, images of which can be found illustrated in Spencer (1998, 314).

A flat, sub-discoidal lead object featuring an off-centre circular perforation and an incised cross. The artefact is very worn and is also bent. It could have functioned as any one of a number of things: a token, a badge, a button, a gaming piece. Objects found in the vicinity might suggest a medieval date for this find.

A very worn and incomplete cast lead object, probably of the medieval period: either a mount or a button. On the reverse is evidence of a casting seam and a lug - either a loop or a spike. The obverse face features a central raised pellet which is surrounded on the extant areas by five border pellets all in varying states of completeness. Most of the losses have been suffered around the edges.

A cast lead artefact, possibly a medieval pilgrim badge. The object is broadly piriform. It features a raised lozenge in the largest part of the field. There is a circular perforation in the centre of the recess within the lozenge. Perhaps representing a comet, three 'rays' protrude from each of the lozenge's sides. A line continues from the end of the lozenge to the triangular end; it ends by curving back. The reverse features a bulge at the triangular end. Above this is an irregular perforation. At the opposite end is a distorted loop, presumably for attachment or suspension.

A flat cast lead disc, probably a medieval mount. The object is decorated unifacially; the reverse is plain apart from a small area of white correction fluid which bears the finder’s number 424. The obverse face is slightly raised apart from a flatter border. It features a raised central line which does not reach the edges. Either side of the line is a five-pointed star with swirly arms. The artefact was found in an area from which has yielded a lot of medieval material.

An irregular cast lead object of circular section of possible medieval date. The object tapers from an approximate diameter of 29.2mm to a diameter of 17.7mm. There is a sub-rectangular recess towards the wider end which might have housed a further element, perhaps a vessel. The object is very worn and scarred with a variety of indentations and incisions on all of its faces. The most regular set of incisions form a small grid.

An incomplete circular cast lead object, probably a spindle whorl. The whorl is discoidal in form and rectangular (with rounded corners) in section with a flat base and top. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact measures 35.1mm in diameter with a large spindle hole with a diameter of 12.0mm. The object has suffered from a break which is evidenced by a fracture seam which runs diagonally up the side. Just less than one half of one of the faces has been lost, both in terms of thickness and surface area. What remains of the spindle whorl is very worn and distorted on both faces. The …
