A lead Early Tudor token (c.1490-1545). These tokens were usually a lead, tin, pewter alloy (Mitchiner and Skinner 1984:102). The token probably belongs to the Tau Cross type, although the reverse is plain. The obverse has a plain cross in a circle with an oblique anti-clockwise ray border. It is similar to no. 13 plate 6 pg. 147 in Mitchiner and Skinner "Early Tudor Tokens c.1425-1672" British Numismatic Journal vol. 54 1984, although there are wider spaces between the rays in the border. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Three lead-alloy rings, all 21-22 mm in diameter. All have roughly circular or oval cross-sections; two are more chunky, about 3.5 mm in cross-section, and one is slimmer, 2-2.5 mm in cross-section. Lead-alloy rings of the chunky shape, but only 15 mm in diameter, are identified by Egan and Pritchard, Dress accessories, as early 15th-century shoe-buckles (1991, 62-4). Lead alloy is not strong, and so may not be suitable for other heavier uses. Probably 1400-1450AD.

A Medieval Miniature toy bowl. Miniature bowls such as this one are thought to represent a pudding or flour basin as opposed to a tea bowl or punch bowl due to the plainness of design (Forsyth and Egan. 2005.110). This artefact although relatively plain incorporates a chevron design on the inside rim and two linear grooves running around the middle of the outside. Miniature kitchen wear such as toy bowls were thought to have been aimed at girls, with miniature knights for the boys (Forsyth and Egan. 2005.60).

An incomplete and damaged lead alloy late Anglo-Saxon nummular brooch, two adjoining parts of which survive. Both of these are bent and distorted and will be discussed together. The brooch would have originally have been circular in shape and now measures circa 36mm in diameter. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

The cloth seal is possibly dated to the 16th to early 17th century. Egan illustrates similar seals with a pine cone, which are from Augsburg, Germany (Nos. 308-309), however the recorded example does not have an 'A' on the reverse which Egan's examples do have. The cloth seal is made from lead or lead alloy. The seal is formed by two circular discs, one with a hole in the centre and the other with a stud protruding. These discs are joined by an integral connecting strip which is folded in half so the discs over-lay each other, and the stud protrudes through the hole. The seal is the…
