An incomplete hand made iron arrowhead dating to the medieval period. The arrow is socketed, with a long socket of c. 45mm, and has a barbed head with a noticeable medial longitudinal spine. In profile it takes the shape of a circle with triangular protrusions on either side. Jessop (1997, 3) notes that this is a 'relatively simple design', the central spine providing 'improved lateral strength and aerodynamic properties'. The tips of the barbs have suffered abrasions, as has the terminal of the socket. This form is that described by Roger Ascham in 1545 as the 'broad head' or 'swal…

An iron arrowhead of medieval date which is likely to be of the London Museum type 14-15, which were exclusively designed for hunting (London Museum 1940, 66-70, fig 16, no 14-15). This arrowhead is barbed and socketed, it measures 63.67mm in length and 19.1mm in width, the tips of the barbs are missing. The socketed shaft has a circular cross-section and is 9.3mm in width. Barbed arrowheads were the norm for hunting from the 13th century onwards.

Iron axehead, possibly Late Iron Age but more likely Post-Medieval or modern. If it did date from the LIA, it would be a very rare Lancashire find indeed. The object is heavily corroded, but the socket and blade are still readily recognisable. Early Iron Age axes were made from forged, not wrought iron and it was difficult to form whole 'sockets' as were known from LBA socketed axes. For iron axes like this the wings needed to be reheated and hammered into the required shape. However, iron axes like this survive only very rarely and since post medieval and some modern tools apply this …

Small fragment of iron tap slag, created as a by-product of iron smelting; smooth, shiny surface and blue-black in colour, reflecting the manganese which replaces the iron in the slag; Roman period or possibly later. We know that the iron ore vein was exploited in this area in the Post-medieval to modern periods, but this is unlikely to be later than 16th century in date, according to expert analysis under XRF at English Heritage.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast circular iron fragment from a medieval padlock. This discoidal element has dished obverse and reverse faces. On the obverse it features two rectangular depressions and a rectangular perforation; the depressions are on the same plane while the hole is perpendicular to them. On the reverse face the depressions turn into protrusions. The hole and the depressions presumably represent the way that these items were moved to allow opening and locking of the lock. The object is very worn and corroded. A complete example with similar perforations can be found illustrated in Egan (19…

Point, length 43mm, width 14mm, thickness 5mm. The artefact is a broken and only the tip remains. From the slightly rounded tip the sides gently expand outwards giving the impression that in its original form the artefact may have been long and slender. There is a riser on both the left and right side, thus giving it a rhombus shaped cross-section, this shape makes it more likely to be a fragment of a weapon, rather than a knife. Similar styles of points are found on medieval arrowheads, together with roman and Anglo-Saxon spearheads, but because of the slender slope of the bl…

Whittle tanged iron knife, surviving length 78mm, width 25mm thickness 5mm. Remains of the rectangular sectioned tang at one end, 26mm long, 12mm wide, thickness 5mm. From the tang the blade expands, the lower edge more steeply angled than the upper. The back is almost straight but angles slightly downwards, the cutting edge rises upwards at an angle to meet at the point. The end of the blade is missing and is only 50mm long, but judging by the angle of the blade, it may have been approximately 110mm long. Because the knife is so corroded it is difficult to give an exact date b…

Whittle tanged iron knife, length 88mm, width 19mm, thickness 5mm. Remains of the rectangular cross section tang survive, 11mm long, 14mm wide, thickness 6mm. The back of the knife is stepped by 5mm, the back is approximately 3mm wide, the tip is missing. Most of the blade has corroded away, leaving an uneven edge. The reason the blade may have been affected by corrosion so much more so than the rest of the knife is probably because the knife is made of iron whilst the blade may have had a higher carbon content (ie steel), the carbon in the iron helps to facilitate corrosion. …
