Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron axehead, possibly Late Iron Age but more likely Post-Medieval or modern. If it did date from the LIA, it would be a very rare Lancashire find indeed. The object is heavily corroded, but the socket and blade are still readily recognisable. Early Iron Age axes were made from forged, not wrought iron and it was difficult to form whole 'sockets' as were known from LBA socketed axes. For iron axes like this the wings needed to be reheated and hammered into the required shape. However, iron axes like this survive only very rarely and since post medieval and some modern tools apply this …

Small metal crucifix, possibly cast cu-alloy or wrought iron with cu-alloy coat. It is very worn and the small figure of Jesus Christ is almost gone. The four terminals of the cross are circular and heavily scratched. The date is difficult to tell. It is possibly the terminal of a medieval or post-medieval rosary.

Unidentified object which looks like the bow and stem of a key, teeth missing. The bow is circular and solid apart from one small perforation (for suspension?). The object is heavily corroded, but the grooved relief decoration on the bow is still clearly visible: nine grooves that run from the centre to the outer edge of the bow.

Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late- or Post-Medieval chape from a dagger or rapier sheath or scabbard, made from iron sheet which was rolled up to form a tube with one open end while the other was cut into triangles so the points could be bent inside to form a closed terminal. The inside (and possibly the outside as well) had a copper-alloy coating which is proven by the green corrosion residue. Near the open end is one rivet hole which bore the rivet that helped keeping the chape on the sheath.

Small iron/cu-alloy belt mount. It was probably cast iron, but had a bronze coating which is now badly affected by bronze disease. It is a small flower-shaped (octefoil) mount with two small studs (iron) on the back which used to attach it to the leather belt or strap.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron ring buckle or annular brooch. It has a finely ribbed front and a plain, smooth obverse. The pin (which was probably made from iron, as well) is missing but a deep groove on the ring indicates were it would have been attached to the frame. The greenish patina on the surface suggested that the object had a bronze coating once.

Object type: LOCK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval Ball lock (?). The object looks exactly like a medieval ball lock but it seems more it was a replica or a cast of a lock (?). It is very light and there does not appear to be a locking mechanism or a hole for the key. However, it is quite corroded and it is also possible that the small joints and the hinge and key hole are too corroded to be identified properly.

Object type: PIN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Yorkshire

Possible iron ring-headed pin with bent ring-head. The terminal of the ring-head has not been moulded onto the stem and this might betray its early date. Considering the not too much corroded state it might be medieval, although the earliest ring-headed pin start in Hallstatt D (Early Iron Age) and this specimen would be of the right shape and length for a period as early as that.

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron leather-worker's or potter's tool, possibly a chisel which was coated with cu-alloy. It seems to be tool because of its one flat and chisel-like end and the other blunt end that have possibly been fitted into a wooden handle. It seems strange that a tool was coated with cu-alloy, but it may have been a coating to protect the iron from corrosion.
