Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Mesolithic worked flake of dark grey flint, made into a scraper. There is some retouch along the curved edge, thus the flake could have been used as a crude scraper. Some previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake. There is no cortex surviving on the surface of the flint.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete retouched blade of mesolithic date. The blade would have been longer but has been broken across its width. The break is old as seen by levels of wear. Both edges have been retouched with sub-parallel removals. This forms a knife edge. The blade was knapped from dark grey flint, and ripples of percussion can be seen along its length.

A Mesolithic flake. Original note suggested a 'tranchet axe'. The images indicates a possible large flake, but not a core-tool such as an axe. The flake is knapped from dark grey flint. It was originally suggested that this 'axe' gave evidence of 'subsequent flakes removed to resharped the blade'. A simple category of flake is assigned by the photograph image.

Complete Neolithic flint axe. Hazel Martingell notes that the axe is flaked on both surfaces except where there are areas of cortex. The flint is rough in quality, probably a large cobble originally. It measures 128mm long, 37mm wide, 36mm thick and weighs 271.26g. The knapping technique consists of the removal of deep flakes at the butt end and flat shallow flake removals at the blade end. The artefact gradually expands from butt to blade. This axe was recovered from the northern part of a ring ditch. The presence of large diagnostic flint artefacts on a site is always of in…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A lithic implement, possibly representing the top of a flint axe. The axe is small, triangular in plan and also in cross-section. The axe is well worn and all of the edges are rounded. The flint is a mottled light brown-yellow colour. There is cortex or re-cortication at the butt end. There is a suggestion that this is lower or middle Palaeolithic, but this identification must only be taken with great caution.

Complete single-piece flint sickle of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3000 BC – 1500 BC). Length 83mm, width 36mm and 19mm thick. Weight 48.71g. In plan, the cutting edge is straight and the outer profile is evenly curved. The initial flaking on both faces has been carried out with a hard hammer and the edges appear to have been created by the use of pressure flaking. There is no evidence for a bulb of percussion or any wear along the cutting edge. The implement has a whitish patina with small areas of iron oxide staining.
