Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint conchoidal flake with smooth conchoidal fractures rippling along the ventral face away from the bulbar scar, or bulb of percussion, and similarly on the dorsal face, within the negative flake scars. There is unimarignal retouch from the proximal end, down the right edge of the dorsal face, creating a slight notch about half way along the edge. There is also unimarginal retouch down the right edge of the ventral face, creating a definite notch about half way along. These notches might have been made in preparation for knapping the flake into a leaf-shaped arrowhead, as it looks as…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint retouched notched scraper, saw or spurred piece. The flake is unimarginally retouched on the distal end, creating three notches and one spur, and on the right edge of the dorsal face. The colour of the flint is a translucent light to dark gray brown. About a third of the dorsal face is covered in cortex which suggests that this was a secondary flake. The ratio of length to breadth is about 1:1. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example of a notched saw on page 143, Fig.5.129, No.F150, and spurred pieces, Nos.F153 & F154 which are all dated to the Later Neolithic.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint scraper with a hinge fracture or hinge termination at the distal end of the ventral face. The dorsal face has been unimarginally retouched from the proximal end down both the right and left edges. The colour of the flint is a mottled beigey gray with litte specks of iron staining on both faces. No cortex remains on the surface of the flake, which suggests that it is a tertiary flake. The length to breadth ratio is 1:1. Andrefsky (1998), illustrates an example of a flake with a hinge termination on page 86, Fig. 5.1(c). Bond (2004) illustrates a similar type…

Flint end and sidescraper, subrectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section, and triangular and arched in profile, with sub-parallel lateral margins, unimarginal worked edges on the right edge of dorsal face, and at the distal end. The right edge has been retouched to create a cutting edge with an angle of about 80º to 90º angle and distal end has been retouched to create an angle between 50º and 60º, which makes the edge effective for scraping but not acute enough to accidentally cut or slice the material being worked. The ventral side bears a long line of parallel scarring, running…

County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint conchoidal flake with smooth conchoidal fractures rippling along the ventral face away from the bulbar scar, or bulb of percussion, and similarly on the dorsal face, within the negative flake scar. There is retouch from the proximal end, down the right edge of the dorsal face, but the denticulations down the same edge on the ventral face look more like the resultant damage. This might have then been used as a crude saw, but there is no evidence of use wear, unless that is what has caused the damage to the proximal end. The colour of the flint is a mottled mid to dark grey. …

A flint thumbnail scraper dating to the Later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. The scraper is oval in shape with a coarsely retouched curved edge on the dorsal face. About a fifth of this edge is unworked - this is the butt area where the original flake was struck off the core. There is some yellowish white cortication in this area. The angle of retouch is about 45 degrees. The ventral surface has a pronounced bulb of percussion There is no retouch on the ventral surface. The scraper measures 28mm in length, 29mm in width and 11mm in thickness.

A Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flaked axe (or possibly an adze). The axe dates from between circa 3000 BC to 1500 BC. The implement has been knapped into a sub-oval shape. One terminal is slightly pointed, the other is rounded. On one surface 5% of the cortex survives. A number of small patches of some sort of iron staining have adhered themselves to the surface of the flint, this could be due to the fact that the flint was found in an area which has iron rich soil, within the East Sussex Weald. The rounded butt end of the axe or adze has been finely knapped, to form a sharp and pr…

About 70% have a light grey patina, 15% have a creamy patina and the rest have a mid grey patina. These artefacts date to the Late Mesolithic. This is part of an assemblage…

There is beige- white patination to one side. A cobble flint with some flake removals was also found at this location and is possibly the early stages of production of a hand axe. Complete Mesolithic flint axe/pick. Hazel Martingell notes: The axe/pick measures 92mm long, 36mm wide, 27mm thick and weighs 88.96g. It is made on light grey flint with inclusions and has an area of brown staining. The knapping technique consists of precise flaking on the curved surface with more random removals across the steeper side. The flat surface is probably a natural break along the cleavage plane. The irregular nature of the artefact suggests that originally the axe was bigger and was substantially modified and reduced in size to form a pick, a fabricator or a punch. This pie…

Complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe/adze. Hazel Martingell notes that the axe measures 110mm long, 40mm wide and 25mm thick. It weighs 140.15g. It is made on good quality grey flint. The knapping technique consists of precise flake removals with very little edge trimming. The axe/adze was recovered from just under the top soil, within the area of a bronze Age ring ditch. Hazel Martingell further comments: The presence of large diagnostic flint artefacts on a site is always of interest. Usually, it is accepted that they are indicators of people utilising that location during a…

There are six flint flakes. Three have cortex remaining, but each have multiple flake scars. They appear to be waste flakes rather than tools. Four are knapped from a dark brown/black flint, the other two are a light brown colour. The dates of the flakes are probably prehistoric, probably dating to the Mesolithic to Early Bronze age.

Microlith knapped from light grey to cream flint. The microlith has parallel edges and there are two parallel arrises on the dorsal surface. There is possibly a hinge fracture at the distal end, however this is unclear from the photograph. This microlith probably dates from the later Mesolithic. Probably an incomplete blade of Mesolithic or early Neolithic date, knapped from light grey flint. The surviving section of the blade is the snapped proximal end. A curved proximal end is common on blades struck from prepared blade cores, with a punctiform butt; a small amount of the striking platform that remains on the removal. The roughly parallel scars on the dorsal surface also suggests that these are broken blades. The incomplete blade is 16.2mm long, 15.26mm across at the widest point, has a maximum thickness of 2.68mm and weighs 0.57 grams

Uncertain lithic implement, probably of Mesolithic or Neolithic date. The artefact has been knapped from dark grey flint with white specks. The flint has snapped, removing the distal end. It is possibly a fragment of a blade, however there are no dorsal blade scars, thus it is unlikely to have been removed from a prepared blade core. The form of the implement resembles a scraper, however the size of the artefact makes this unlikely. The fragment is 17.31mm long, 12.91mm across at the widest point, has a maximum thickness of 3.08mm and weighs 0.91 grams.
