Probable fragment of gunflint dating to the Post-Medieval or 17th century. As an example Bond, (Bond, C.J. 2004 Guide to the Identification, Assessment and Recording of Lithics. October 2004, Version 1), fig. 1.145 c, illustrates some Brandon gunflints (used for a horse-pistol). The recorded object however is slightly different shape to these examples, and not necessarily used for horse-pistols. In plan the object is sub-rectangular, the top edge being obliquely angled where it has been broken from a larger broad blade. The dorsal (upper face) has three arrise…

Small platform gun-flint, probably from a pocket pistol, almost square in plan, with sub-parallel lateral margins, and trapezoidal in section and in profile, with parallel faces. A flint core would have been quartered and knapped with metal punches to produce suitably broad rectangular flakes which would then have been dressed and segmented into square chunks. The flint has bimarginal worked edges, and worked distal and proximal ends. Apart from the edges, the ventral face is smooth and flat. The dorsal face is chamfered on both sides and at both ends, having been retouched abruptly…

Piece of worked flint from a flintlock gun mechanism. The flintlock was introduced in the middle of the 16th century but it wasn't until the reign of William III that the flintlock became the main regulation firearm for the British Army. The knapped flint was used within the musket mechanism to produce a spark and would last between 20-25 shots before it had to be replaced. The flint is roughly square shaped in plan, with four edges showing working and in section is trapezoidal. The flint weighs 2.54g and measures 21.38mm in length, 17.98mm in width and 3.6mm in thickness.

A probable strike a light of post medieval date, consisting of an oval shaped worked flint with a rectangular piece of lead wrapped around its centre. It measures 27mm in length and 20mm in width. The lead is perhaps to allow the flint to be held more easily. This strike a light is likely to be circa 18th century in date.
