Helen Walker of Essex County Council kindly scanned the material and provided short notes. A selection of animal bone was also recovered at the same time and is recorded as ESS-17E485. Tray 1 Slip-painted, unglazed sherds o…

The object is a fragmentary ceramic handle. The handle is a sub-rectangular in plan, and is quite straight in profile. One terminal has a corner which flares outwards, suggesting this terminal was connected to the vessel. The opposite terminal is also broken, but does not flare outwards. The handle is decorated on one face with a vertical wide ā€˜Uā€™ shaped groove. The fabric is quite hard, is red/orange throughout, and has white rounded quartz inclusions. It weighs 30.04g. It is slightly abraded. It probably dates to the late Medieval to early Post Medieval period.
