A fragment of a strap handle from a medieval jug, probably 13th or 14th century in date. The reduced light grey fabric with oxidised surfaces has a fine sand temper with sparse haemotite flecks. This record compromises a large number of pottery vessel sherds from a discrete area, namely an area of domestic dumping from a house of unknown origins that was demolished in 1817. The house is visible as a cropmark under the right conditions. The material was recovered by the landowner during the digging of a water main which prompted further investigation. Fragment of a ceramic roof tile of Medieval date (AD 1100 – AD 1400). Length 63mm, width 76mm and 11mm thick. Weight 51.56g. The fabric of the triangular shaped fragment is hard and sandy and reddish yellow in colour (Munsell Color 7.5YR 7/6). It has an inner core which is more reddish. One edge is straight as manufactured, another edge is a fresh break and the third edge is an old break. The piece has slight curvature with the concave face having a green glaze overall.

The object is a fragmentary ceramic handle. The handle is a sub-rectangular in plan, and is quite straight in profile. One terminal has a corner which flares outwards, suggesting this terminal was connected to the vessel. The opposite terminal is also broken, but does not flare outwards. The handle is decorated on one face with a vertical wide ‘U’ shaped groove. The fabric is quite hard, is red/orange throughout, and has white rounded quartz inclusions. It weighs 30.04g. It is slightly abraded. It probably dates to the late Medieval to early Post Medieval period.
