A Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flaked axe (or possibly an adze). The axe dates from between circa 3000 BC to 1500 BC. The implement has been knapped into a sub-oval shape. One terminal is slightly pointed, the other is rounded. On one surface 5% of the cortex survives. A number of small patches of some sort of iron staining have adhered themselves to the surface of the flint, this could be due to the fact that the flint was found in an area which has iron rich soil, within the East Sussex Weald. The rounded butt end of the axe or adze has been finely knapped, to form a sharp and pr…

A small basic scraper dating to the Neolithic period (circa 3500 – 2100 BC). The bulb of percussion and striking platform both survive on the ventral surface. A number of ripples are also evident. Numerous blade flakes have been removed from the dorsal surface before this flake itself was removed. 30% of the dorsal surface is still coated with the natural cortex. There is some evidence of retouch on the left edge of the dorsal surface.

A small crude waste flake Neolithic to Bronze Age period (circa 3500 – 800 BC). The bulb of percussion and striking platform both survive on the ventral surface. The dorsal surface is still coated in the natural cortex. There is some evidence of retouch on the right edge of the dorsal surface.

A small crude waste flake Neolithic to Bronze Age period (circa 3500 – 800 BC). The bulb of percussion and striking platform have both been removed but ripples can be seen on the ventral surface. The dorsal surface still has 40% of the natural cortex coating it. There is some evidence of retouch on the left edge of the dorsal surface.

A small waste flint flake, weighing 11.97g. The flake has a striking platform and a bulb of percussion. There is evidence that previous flakes have been removed from the surface of the flake before this flake itself was removed from the core. Approximately 3% of one surface still has the original cortex surface surviving

A small Neolithic thumb scaper. The dorsal surface is still coated with 40% of the natural cortex. The flake has been broken, therefore removing the bulb of percussion and the striking platform. The edges of the dorsal surface (apart from the broken edge) all exhibit signs of having been retouched. Little retouch is evident on the ventral surface, though some scars are evident.

A polished flint axe or adze. The artefact has been made by initial knapping to rough out the shape, then grinding to produce a smooth surface. This axe is complete, though there is evidence reflaking, post polishing. The axe is roughly tear-drop shaped, without the pointed tip. Both ends of the axe are well rounded. The axe slightly tapers from the butt end, the axe is therefore wedge-shaped and oval in section. Approximately 80% of the original surface has been removed by the later reflaking. The reflaking does not appear to have affected the chamfered edges of the axe. The whole art…
