Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy mount, probably late medieval. The mount is subcircular in plan and domed in section with a recessed reverse. It shows a human face of indeterminable gender. The face is moulded with a hairstyle that frames each side of the face. It has a grooved centre parting with two transverse grooves that breaks the top of the hairstyle into three rows. There are incised diagonal lines along the rows of hair which give it a textured detail. The face is moulded with a prominent triangular nose, now slightly damaged. The eyes are formed from incised lentoids with central dots. The …

Fragment of cast copper alloy 11th century stirrup mount of Williams's class A, type 5. The complete stirrup mount would have consisted of a pentagonal, flat frame or body, set within a pair of tendril like shapes, down each diagonal side, which terminate in scrolls. Extending from the apex would have been a long, handle like extension, which would have probably terminated in a zoomorphic head that supported the apex loop. The lower portion of the stirrup mount would have had the two rivet holes and flange for attachment. The fragment recorded here represents the tendrils and upper po…

Incomplete cast copper alloy mid first century Romano-British brooch of Colchester-derivative Polden Hill (folded wings, Eastern Group) type. The wings of the brooch are complete and cylindrical. There is a deliberate slot to the rear of the cylinder, which we would expect to hold a spring mechanism, but this slot reveals the remains of a coiled spring partially surviving to one side. Otherwise the majority of the springhead is missing, as is the pin shaft. The ends of the wings are not capped. The front of the wings are decorated with a pair vertical grooved lines, placed at either s…

Incomplete, cast copper alloy Late Bronze Age pegged spearhead. The socket of the spearhead is essentially conical, having a circular section, and tapering into the rib of the blade. The once leaf-shaped blade (probably elliptical) is very worn down and little more than two flanges, that represent the lower blade survive. The surviving tip of the object is truncated and a small circular hole at the tip shows the cross section of the circular mid rib. Further damage from this truncation exists in a crack that runs from the broken tip for approximately 10mm down onto the rib. The side of…

The buckle frame is subrectangular in plan with slightly expanded top corners and is slightly domed in section, having a flat reverse. At the front of the frame is an integral moulding of two, parallel transverse raised lines which form the pin rest. The frame is split along one side. At the point where the buckle meets with the integral plate, is a raised moulded band that runs in parallel to the frame. This band is pierced with a circular hole, which would have held the pin. Incomplete copper alloy medieval buckle plate. This object is formed from two plates, rectangular in plan and flat in section. The front plate is damaged at one short end, but it is possible to see four surviving rivet holes and a damaged fifth hole at the broken end. There is a hole at each corner and one set in the centre. A copper alloy rivet survives in the central hole and in the bottom right hand corner (when viewed with the damaged end to the left). These join with the back plate, in effect creating a sandwich space between the plates. The back plate is much more damaged than th…

Complete copper alloy terminal or knife-stop from a post medieval knife. This terminal is formed from a single sheet of metal. If laid flat out, the object would have a central flat, sub-circular disc from which extends two opposing rectangular arms. These arms have been folded down from the disc at 90 degrees so that the form the walls of the terminal. They have been curved, and just about meet, so that they roughly echo the sides of the subcircular disc. Each of the rectangular side sections has been incised with a cross. In the lower angle of each cross is a circular perforation for…
