Two fragments of worked bone. 1: This fragment has been carved into a fine point, and is semicircular in section. The inner surface of the bone is rough, as expected, but the outer surface is polished, more so towards the point. This may have been done deliberately for decoration or may be the result of a repeated action, such as pushing the point through leather? The object is broken at the broad end. It has a surviving length of 49.76mm, is 10.14mm at the widest point and weighs 2.97g. It is white with grey patches and the tip is significantly darker grey. 2: This fragment of tu…

Probable copper alloy lid from an Anglo-Saxon workbox. The lid is circular thin sheet of copper alloy with a central hole, containing a suspension loop. The loop consists of a single oval strip of copper alloy looped over at the top, threaded through the hole and then splayed on the reverse to secure it to the lid. Attached to the suspension loop is another small strip of copper alloy looped through the suspension loop, perhaps forming the first link in a chain. There is a further hole to either side of the central hole although it is not certain whether these are areas of damage. …

Treasure Case 2005 T22: Acquired by South Molton and District Museum after being declared treasure. Description: Silver whistle cut from sheet and shaped into a tapering form. It has two applied transverse fillets at the widest end (the mouthpiece) and at the opposite end, which is damaged. At this point, there may have been a hollow cast sphere, with a 'pea' inside. An elaborate swag or garland of cast silver is soldered at three points and the whistle is surmounted by a punched Lombardic 'A'. Discussion: A similar whistle is part of the collections of the Somerset County Museu…

A fragment of a hollow object, oval in section and with tapering sides. Each 'narrow' side has a pair of projections with different sizes and positions on either side. Each 'wide' side has a panel of cast decoration which contains lettering on a background of parallel lines. The surviving end of each panel has a trifoliate spray. Around each panel is a frame infilled with diagonal lines. The form and meaning of the lettering in both panels is unclear. A cast lead hawking whistle, probably post-medieval in date (circa 1650-1850). The whistle is cone shaped, tapering outwards from the open end. The open end of the whistle would have been the mouth piece. By looking inside the whistle one can see that the whistle is only hollow until about half of the way down the interior of the body of the whistle. There is a sheet of lead, dividing this space into two. Either side of this are the sound two holes, which would have allowed the air and therefore sound to pass down the whistle and out through these holes which are visible on the exterio…

A very worn whistle probably cast in pewter of probable post-medieval in date. The whistle is the shape of a frustum, or truncated cone, tapering outwards from the original open end. This latter would have been the mouthpiece. By looking inside one can see that the whistle is only hollow until about half of the way down the interior of the body of the whistle. Beyond this is a sheet of metal which divides the internal space into two. Central on either side of the exterior are two holes, one of which is abraded. The holes would have allowed the air to pass down the whistle and regulate…
