Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy Roman miniature socketed axe. The metal is heavily pitted, indicating that the object could have been water rolled. Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper-alloy scabbard chape of early Anglo-Saxon date. The object comprises a tapering triangular plate of copper alloy, with a rounded end, which continues into a bend and creates a small back plate. The front plate has three circular settings, cast integrally to the plate; one on either side of the long edges and one on the point of the triangle. The settings are now empty but would have perhaps once housed a stone. There is a lot of iron corrosion on the surface of the chape. Workflow stage: Published
A copper alloy unidentified object - possibly a measure or scoop. The object has a rounded bowl (similar to a spoon) and a short (broken), square-sectioned handle/stem. An Anglo-Saxon mid-tenth century strap-end fragment.
Fragment of lower end of a silver tongue-shaped strap-end. The piece is cast and has a pierced openwork design, originally symmetrical, with animals and vegetation. The fragment shows part of an animal, probably a bird, pecking at the base of a scroll of foliage. The piece compares well with the strap-end now in Winchester City Museum (see The Golden Age of Anglo-Saxon Art, eds. J. Backhouse, D.H. Turner and L. Webster, (London, 1984), no. 83), which is a fine example of Winchester style on metalwork, with rich inhabited acanthus…

A cast lead object, which is possibly a vessel fragment. The object is sub-rectangular in shape and there is a large knop (or knob) projecting from the top of the object. The knob could possibly be the handle for the lid of a vessel. It is possible that this object is a repair from a much larger vessel. There is a deeply incised linear line on the object, running from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock, either side of the knob. The object is concave on one surface (the one without the knob), this surface has several deep gouge marks, which could have resulted from plough damage. All breaks very w…
