A cast copper alloy unidentifiable object, which is undatable. The object consists of a four lobed pointed terminal, with a rounded tip, 24.30mm long, from the base of which extends a circular section ‘arm’ approximately 18.70mm long. There is iron staining at the tip of the point, and at the break where the arm terminates, perhaps indicating an iron core to the object. The rest of the surface is light greyish green.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper alloy unidentified object - possibly a measure or scoop. The object has a rounded bowl (similar to a spoon) and a short (broken), square-sectioned handle/stem. On the reverse of the 'bowl' there what appears to be a flaw in the metal (forming a small raised hole). The break is worn and as a result of the break it is impossible to see how long the handle would have been. The object remains unidentified and undatable.

A cast copper alloy mount or similar object with the remains of a suspension loop. The mount is roughly shield shaped in design, but is slightly concave. On the front of the mount there is a stylised head, in a Romanised/ Neo-classical design. The face has a slender nose, a small mouth and large rounded eyes, within ropework borders. Around the head an elaborate hair style can be seen, again made up of a sort of ropework design. Below the head there is a small drilled hole, which looks as though it could be a later addition to the piece. The top of the object is flat and the remains …

A cast lead object, which is possibly a vessel fragment. The object is sub-rectangular in shape and there is a large knop (or knob) projecting from the top of the object. The knob could possibly be the handle for the lid of a vessel. It is possible that this object is a repair from a much larger vessel. There is a deeply incised linear line on the object, running from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock, either side of the knob. The object is concave on one surface (the one without the knob), this surface has several deep gouge marks, which could have resulted from plough damage. All breaks very w…

A cast copper alloy unidentifiable object, which is undatable. The alloy appears to have a high tin content within the mixture, as the metal is a mid silvery-grey colour. The object consists of a D-shaped loop, with a wide frame. A double loop (figure of eight) arrangement has been cast integrally to the straight section of the D-shaped loop. Two rounded knops decorate the terminals of the double loops, with one on each end. The object is undecorated. The surface of the metal would have originally been smooth and shiny, but is now corroded and pitted. The object could be some sort of…

Inside the outer frame there is a cross, which extends from corner to corner (also made of square sectioned strips). The design and manufacture is quite crude and irregular. On the reverse of the object there is a rounded sectioned strip of copper alloy extending from the centre of the cross. This projection is broken, the breaks looks well worn and corroded. A cast cooper alloy unidentifiable object, which is undatable. The object has been formed from one solid piece of copper alloy, but has three loops soldered to the surface of the main part of the object. The object is basically a cylindrical shaped tube of copper alloy, with rounded terminals. The three loops have been soldered to the surface of the cylinder approximately 2-3mm in from one of the terminals (it is unclear if this is the top of the object or the bottom). One of the loops is bent and a crack has appeared where the loop joins the main body of the object. If that loop is po…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper alloy pin. The pin has a sub-square sectioned shaft. The shaft tapers inwards from the head to the end of the pin. The head is integral to the tapering shaft. The head looks slightly damaged so it is possible that something else could have been attached to the top of the head. The other terminal of the shaft is also broken and looks well worn. The shaft therefore survives to a total length of only 35.6mm. The surface of the pin is corroded and heavily pitted. This object could possibly be Early Medieval in date, but could date anything from the Bronze Age to the Early Pos…

Record ID: SUSS-EE0BF3
Object type: PIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper alloy pin. The pin has a sub-square sectioned shaft. The long shaft tapers inwards from the head end of the pin to the opposite terminal. At its maximum the pins section measures 4.7 x 4.2mm in thickness. No head survives, as this terminal of the pin is broken and also well worn. Due to this break the shaft only survives to a length of 60.4mm. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour and the original patina survives as a smooth, glossy surface. This object could possibly be Early Medieval in date, but could dated anywhere from the Bronze Age to the Early Post-medieval period.
