Slightly worn Roman denarius of Julia Mamaea, dating 221-235AD. The obverse of the coin is in good condition, with a right facing female bust surrounded by the legend [IVLIA] MAMAEA AVG. The reverse has a worn legend and depicts a standing female figure, with the right arm extending downwards and the left arm holding a cornucopia. This could either be Ceres or Annona, who share similar attributes. There is possibly a ship's prow behind the figures feet, however this is unclear due to the degree of wear. The positioning of a ship would identify the figure as Annona, as a ship is not ass…

The copper-alloy core of a plated contemporary copy of a silver denarius, possibly of Elagabalus, and dating to the period AD 218 to 222 (Reece period 10). IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG or IVLIA MAESA AVG reverse depicting female empress bust right. Mint not specified by RIC. cf. RIC IV, Pt II, p. 45, no. 207 and 208.
There is some uncertainty about the identification of this coin. It might also be a copy of a denarius of Severus Alexander with a reverse of Julia Mamaea. cf. RIC IV, Pt II, p. 95, no. 315.
Whatever the case, this is an exceptionally rare coin.

A silver denarius of Maximinus I (AD 235-8), dating to the period AD 235 (Reece Period 11). FIDES MILITVM reverse type depicting Fides standing left holding two standards. Mint of Rome. RIC IV, Pt II, p. 140, no. 7a; BMC VI, p. 222, no. 1. This coin has the early bust of Maximinus, before the die-engravers knew his actual looks. This coin is damaged with the damage respecting the portrait of the emperor on the obverse. This suggests that the coin may have been deliberately cut.

An unusual gold-plated (with foil) silver denarius of Severus Alexander (AD 221-35). The core of the forgery is probably a base metal denarius common of the time, which has been overlaid with a sheet of gold. The reverse of the coin clearly shows the folded over edges of the sheet, which do not extend far on the reverse side, leaving the centre of the coin exposed. The reason for this is unknown and no other examples are in the British Museum collections at the time of recording. Rather than trying to pass itself off as currency (It is obviously smaller than an aureus), it ma…
