A collection of flint flakes probably dating from the late Neolithic to middle Bronze Age. The assemblage consists of thirty four waste flakes and was collected through fieldwalking. They vary in size, from bewtween 15.2mm wide and 16.1mm high, to 42.8mm wide by 62.4mm high. They are generally broad, with a single bulb of percussion and rippling. The flint varies from a dark grey to a highly patinated white. The total weight of the assemblage is 296.5g.

A flint core of probable late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The core has a roughly semi-circular striking platform at the top and a bulb of percussion at the bottom. There are three narrow flake removal scars at the top, just below the striking platform, and a further small horizontal scar. The rest of the perimeter of the flint is unworked and it would appear that this irregularly-shaped core, which seems to have been for the production of narrow blades, was rejected fairly quickly. Portions of the cortex also remain intact. It measures 28.2mm wide by 17.2mm thick and 60.1mm hig…

A flint core of probable late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The core has a single platform of roughly semi-circular form. It has been poorly prepared, and was probably rejected fairly quickly. The flat vertical face is still largely covered in its cortex, although some attempt has been made to remove this. The convex vertical face has three or four narrow flake removal scars which are consistent with the production of narrow blades. The surface of the flint has a light greyish blue patina. It measures 29.3mm wide by 17.2mm thick and 44.6mm high. It weighs 36.19g.

A flint core of probable mid to late Neolithic date. The flint is rough in form and still retains a large portion of its cortex. It has approximately six or seven broad vertical flake removal scars, with a further two horizontal scars close to the platform. The surface of the flint is a heavily patinated white. It measures 38.1mm wide by 24.6mm thick and 39.8mm high. It weighs 33.28g.

A flint core of probable mid to late Neolithic date. The object has a roughly semi-circular striking platform and broad flake removal scars around its perimeter. These are generally vertically aligned, although there are a few diagonal ones also. A small portion of the cortex remains and has a pinkish hue, possibly indicative of having been burnt. The flint surface is a heavily patinated creamy white colour. It measures 35.3mm wide by 26.4mm thick and 28.8mm high. It weighs 27.73g.

A flint core of probable mid Neolithic to mid Bronze Age date. The flint has a semi circular striking platform and has only been worked on its convex side, the remaining edge retaining its natural cortex. There are three or four flake removal scars of varying widths. The flint is a patinated creamy white colour. It measures 45.7mm wide by 23.4mm thick and 38mm high and weighs 43.29g.

Core of mottled orange-brown flint. The core is very worn, possibly as a result of water rolling. Its form, colour and condition indicates a Palaeolithic date.

A flint end scraper of probable early Neolithic date. The tool is roughly oval in shape and has been made from a flake struck from a core. A portion of the core's striking platform remains at the bottom. The upper surface of the object is convex and has several vertical arrises. The upper edge (opposite the striking platform remnant) has been retouched to form the scraping edge. There is no evidence of working along the two long sides. The reverse is plain apart from a bulb of percussion which emanates from the striking platform. The surface of the flint is a heavily patinated white. I…

Retouched artefact Neolithic (Possibly) –Early Bronze Age (Possibly) Length 31mm, width 28mm, thickness 8mm The bulb of percussion and emanating ripples are missing from the ventral. One arrise in the dorsal, which is off centre. The flint is in a triangular shape, along one edge there is very small flaking scars showing where this edge was retouched, this edge is very worn and the flaking scars have discoloured the same colour as the patina. The other two edges have very large, crude flaking scars. On the dorsal side there is a knop towards the top, this is where…

Retouched lithic artefact Neolithic (Possibly) Iron Age (Probably) Length 30mm, width 26mm, thickness 10mm Covering most of the dorsal side, one flaking scar emanating from where the striking platform is. On the ventral side there is a large bulb of percussion with flaking scars around the striking platform, the edges have been heavily damaged by natural process. On one edge there is a retouched section, from the ventral, 8mm long. Very dark brown patina with grey mottling. The cortex is dark grey.

Flint flake, reworked into a knife or scraper. The flint has approximately 80 percent cortex remaining on its dorsal surface, and a further 10 percent patina. Looking at the bulb of percussion on the ventral side, the strike would appear to have come from the patinated side downwards. The flake has then been retouched on all sides. The flint is a dark mottled brown colour.

Mesolithic flint end scraper, 43mm long, 22mm wide, 9mm thick with a weight of 16.7 grams. A broad thick blade which is missing its distal end. The surface has light cortication all over its brown surface. It is unusual as its Bulbar end has been turned into a scraper with converging retouch.

Implement made out of flint. The flint is vaguely leaf-shaped, and could possibly be a rough-out for a leaf-shaped arrowhead or a scraper. The dorsal and vertral surfaces appear to be more frost shattered than worked. One edge at the distal end shows definite signs of retouch, the other edge is dubious. There is no cortext remaining. The flint is well patinated except for the areas showing definite retouch. The flint is a dark brown colour, and the patina is creamy-blue.

Flint flakes (one incomplete) with extensive retouch / use wear marks on both lateral edges, probably from use as knives. All are in grey flint with only slight patination. Although not directly datable the well known finds from the Colney area suggest that they are probably Neolithic.

This tranchet axe is complete. It measures 120mm x 36mm x 23mm. It is made of dark and light grey flint with inclusions. There are two areas with cortex remaining. Two stages of flaking are clearly visible, first at the top, or hafted, end of the axe. This flaking is bold and is the remains of the original roughing out of the artefact, which has created a triangular section. Secondly, the lower, or blade half of the axe has fine shallow flake removals obliterating the roughing out, in favour of a smooth surface. The tranchet flake removal, from which the artefact gets its name, is the …

A polished flint axe or adze. The artefact has been made by initial knapping to rough out the shape, then grinding to produce a smooth surface. This axe is complete, though there is evidence reflaking, post polishing. The axe is roughly tear-drop shaped, without the pointed tip. Both ends of the axe are well rounded. The axe slightly tapers from the butt end, the axe is therefore wedge-shaped and oval in section. Approximately 80% of the original surface has been removed by the later reflaking. The reflaking does not appear to have affected the chamfered edges of the axe. The whole art…
