Two rim sherds and four body sherds of a wheel-thrown ceramic vessel of Medieval date. Possibly part of a Saintonge Ware pitcher. Length 78mm, width 82mm and thickness of body 7mm. Weight 107.71g.
The sherds all belong to the same vessel and the fine fabric is buff coloured with a grey inner core. The larger of the sherds forms 9% of the circumference of the rim and also part of the "strap" handle. The diameter of the rim can be estimated to have been about 180mm. Base sherd of a ceramic vessel of Late Medieval date, probably the second half of the fifteenth century (AD 1450 – AD 1500). The breaks are old. Length 47mm, width 65mm and 9mm thick. Weight 45.79g.
The sherd is a fragment of the base of a vessel, possibly a jar. Thje outer face has has five thumbed or fingered impressions known as "pie-crust" decoration. This incomplete part of the vessel consists of base and lower body sherds (15 sherds in total). Rim sherd of a thin walled (thick rimmed) earthenware vessel of probable medieval date (1200-1550). This sherd is worn and probably comes from the body of either a storage jar or cooking pot. The fabric is relatively hard and brittle; this suggests that it has been over fired or (more likely) been in an uncontrolled fire. Base sherd of a ceramic vessel of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 –AD 1550). Diameter 70mm, overall thickness 21mm. Weight 46.77g.
The sherd consists of about half of the base of a jug. The stoneware fabric is hard and grey and the outer edge is frilled to form an undulating footring. The inner unglazed surface is a light pink/buff colour and the outer surface has a smooth reddish brown (Munsell Color 5YR 5/4) glaze. When complete, the overall diameter of the base would have been about 70mm.
