A lead ampulla. The artefact is crudely-made; it has a narrow body and a long neck, ending in a rough opening. The surface is rough, and may have been made of two beaten sheets which were soldered together. The surface is dark grey. This artefact dates to the medieval period, and would have held holy water; the crude design suggests an earlier medieval origin.

Medieval lead ampulla, the mouth of which is slightly damaged. It has quite a long neck, about half the length of the object in its entirety. The loops are angular. It measures 57x36.5x max.7mm and weighs 49.85g.
The reverse is undecorated while the front has a scallop motif reaching from a central pointed oval (with points on a vertical axis) filled with cross hatching to the edges, quite high up and stopping just short of the handle.
A similarly 'flared' scallop can be seen in Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue Part 2, no.177.
Dates to c.1350-c.1530.

The ampulla is decorated on one side with a crown on a hatched background. The reverse has a crowned W, also on a hatched background. It is 31 mm wide and 49 mm high. The ampulla has been pinched together at the top to contain the thaumaturgic water dispensed to pilgrims at shrines and holy wells.

A cast lead ampulla. Ampullae were an important kind of pilgrim souvenir in the medieval period. They were designed to contain a dose of thaumaturgic water, which would have been given to the pilgrims at the shrines and holy wells (Spencer, 1990 (part 2), p. 86). This example dates to between c. 1350-1530.
Almost all of the ampulla survives; only part of the rim has been slightly damaged and therefore some of the rim is missing. Both lugs survive intact; one is higher than the other. The front of the ampulla depicts a four petalled flower in relief, the petals have been decorated wi…
