Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead flask-shaped pilgrim's ampulla, most likely of 15th century date. Both sides have moulded decoration. On one side there is a floral motif with four petals and with geometric design behind. On the other side there appears to be a crown in the lower section with a series of lozenge-shaped motifs and vertical lines above. This combination can be found illustrated in Spencer (1990, 89-90; refs. 182-184). One complete loop survives although it is now bent, while the other has been broken off with only a fragment remaining.

The lower part of a lead pilgrim's ampulla or holy water bottle. One side is decorated with curving closely-spaced radiating lines suggesting a scallop shell motif, best classified as Spencer type II. The other shows a crown above the letter W. Most of one loop handle survives. This artefact is almost a cross between two ampullae illustrated in Spencer (1990, 88-89; refs. 179, 180).

Lead flask-shaped pilgrim's ampulla, most likely of 15th-century date. The lower end of the ampulla flares quite sharply and on one side this lower end has moulded scallop shell decoration, best classified as Spencer type I. On the same side the upper section of the object is now heavily worn although there are possible traces of additional decoration. There are no traces of decoration on the reverse of the object which is now badly worn and bent. Both loops are missing and the opening is now damaged.

Flint arrowhead, triangular with convex edge at the attachment end. There is some damage to the tip and one edge. The arrowhead has a white-pale grey patina, suggesting that it was deposited in chalk. The damaged areas also have this patina indicating that the damage occurred in antiquity.

A Medieval iron arrowhead (11th – 14th century). The arrowhead is socketed (diameter of socket: 10.14mm) with splayed cutting barbs. The barbs are broken and missing and there is some damage to the end of the socket with a small section missing. Jessop (1997) identifies a range of early multi-purpose forms dating from the 11th – 14th century and this example fits comfortably within that bracket. Dimensions: length: 56.72mm; width: 30.17mm; thickness: 8.85mm; diameter: 10.14mm; weight: 13.26g. Reference: Jessop, O. 1997. Medieval Arrowheads. Finds Datasheet 22. Finds Rese…

A Neolithic flint axe complete except for a small number of recent flakes. The blade of the axe is rounded and is missing a large flake from one surface. From here the axe tapers gradually to the butt end (W. 85.5-35mm) which is missing three large and some smaller flakes from the same surface, but would probably have been rounded. The surface from which the flakes are missing has a pale/white patina, except where the flakes are missing, indicating that these are the result of recent damage. The recent flakes reveal a beige/grey flint evident on the other surface where although the…

Roughout for a chalk hand-axe, measuring 152x87x46mm. It weighs 460g. It is presumably Neolithic in date and possibly ritual, given its non-use as a cutting implement. The outer surface of the original chalk nodule is visible over c.10% of the object. It has been fashioned by large flakes being removed. Its manufacture and shape show this is undoubtedly a hand axe.

Damaged and incomplete 14th century lead secular badge, depicting a human ?male bust within a circle of ring-and-pellets (bound on either side by a rib). The damage is across the right side of face and shoulders, as you look at it. The figure appears to have quite bushy hair on the undamaged side, and the neck and top of body are triangular in shape bound by a line of four small pellets at the base. It measures 25mm in diameter and is 1mm thick. It weighs 4.89g. The reverse is rather fragile, the rectangular-sectioned pin being bent and only just remaining attached. A small catch i…

Copper alloy bead, possibly of late Iron Age-early Roman date. The bead is circular with a large circular hole in the centre (D. 6.5mm).
