A copper alloy openwork strap-end (Early Medieval 9th - 10th century). According to Gabor Thomas' typology it is Class E tongue-shaped Type 2 anthropomorphic. The openwork decoration forms a central figure with outstretched arms with ribbed lateral lobes or stylised beasts. The strap-end has a solid rather than a split end for attachment. There are two perforations; there is a break across the left perforation. The end of the strap-end is slightly distorted and is bent upwards; this probably occured whilst in the ground. Patchy dark green patina with red/brown metal visible through. I…

A copper alloy Medieval composite strap end with a sheet spacer occupying the whole width (14th century). The strap end has parallel sides and the end is a triangular point with a very small rounded terminal. The open end is straight with a single central rivet to secure the strap end to the strap. The strap end comprises three sheets of copper alloy, the middle sheet only extends 21.35cm along the length of the outer plates. The lower plate has twisted slightly out of line from the other two and the left corner is bent backwards. The rivet at the open end no longer connects with …

Part of the copper alloy forked spacer plate from a three-piece composite strap end, 14th - 16th Century. The forked spacer plate has a circular expansion near the end; below the circular expansion there are only small residual projections that are the remains of the flaring forks. At the opposite end is a projection. The projection is the same shape as the acorn terminal on no. 14372 from Bedern (Ottaway & Rogers 2002:2901 fig. 1476). It is oval with a raised collar near the base but lacks the cross hatching on the raised collar. The forked spacer has a pale - dark green matt pati…

An Anglo Saxon copper-alloy strap-end dating to the 9th century. The strap-end has curving long edges shaped into scallops, and a stylised zoomorphic terminal (in this case quite stylised). An incised, curvilinear, 'S'-shaped scroll-like pattern is repeated three times along each side down the length of the strap-end, one S shape per scallop. A central pattern of a triangle, two affronted L shapes and two addorsed C shapes provides a mirror symmetry along its length. This curvilinear pattern conforms to Thomas (2003)'s Class A Type 2, 'Patterned' type. There are two rivet holes in the…

A copper alloy composite three-piece strap end consisting of two plates and a forked spacer (15th-16th century). The forked spacer has a collared acorn terminal/knop. The front plate is decorated with a diagonal cross of rocker-arm decoration - each arm of the cross points to a corner of the plate. The reverse plate is undecorated and has some damage in the form of some deep diagonal scratches that has gone through to base metal. The strap end has two copper alloy rivets (both still present) in the open end to secure the strap end to the strap. There appears to be some mineralise…

A copper alloy composite three-piece strap end with a collared acorn terminal/knop forked spacer and two flat plates (?15th - 16th century). The two arms of the forked spacer extend approximately two thirds along the length of the plates. The ends of the arms are blunt with file marks visible. There is one single rivet located halfway along the attachment edge. Neither of the plates are decorated, although there are possibly some traces of silvering or tinning. The edges of the plates have been worn away and damaged. Patchy pale-green matt patina with dark grey/green base metal s…

An Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy strap-end broadly dating to the 9th century. It is a Thomas Class A, Type 2, with a split end, convex sides, and animal-head terminal. The split end has a central notch creating a slight bi-lobed appearance. There are two rivet holes, one in each of the lobes. The rivet hole on the lower surface is broken. A medieval - post-medieval copper alloy composite strap end (15th - 16th century). The strap end is formed from two sheets of metal. The first sheet has been cast to form the front and sides; the second is a smaller square sheet and provides the back of the open-end. The front sheet is decorated with seven incised vertical lines topped with two horizontal lines to give the appearance of a pillar or column (length 27.36mm; width 24.99mm). This may read "IHC" or "HIS" but corrosion obscures the probable inscription. There are two small scrolled projections, one on eit…

A damaged, corroded, and incomplete copper-alloy strap end of medieval date. Composite strap end probably dating from the 13th to 15th century AD. The object is comprised of two parallel plates with a copper-alloy spacer in between. One of the plates is largely missing. The largely intact plate is rectangular, with a narrow waist towards the bottom and, below this, a small damaged hook. The top is damaged but appears to have a cut out "V-shaped" section at the centre, and a small rivet hole in each corner. It measures 36mm long by 12.5mm wide and 2.3mm thick. It weighs 3.73g.

A copper-alloy strap-end of middle to late early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. A Thomas "Type A" strap-end (see ref. 2) dating from the 9th century AD. The attachment end measures 8.2mm wide and is split, with two small circular holes and a double scalloped outer edge. The long sides are slightly convex and converge to a stylised animal head terminal. The squared off snout gives way above to recessed cheeks, which in turn give way to two eyes, represented by small indented semi-circles. Above the eye area is a slightly raised panel containing two upward-pointing indented chevrons separ…

A medieval copper-alloy strap-end. Composite strap-end probably dating from the late 13th to early 15th century AD. The object consists of a forked spacer with a collared knop and decorative band, which sits between two parallel plates. The plates converge slightly towards the knop and have their bottom corners cut off in order to match the angled sides of the spacer. They are riveted together at the wider end. The object measures 34.5mm long by up to 14.1mm wide and 3.3mm thick. It weighs 4.62g.

A medieval copper-alloy strap-end. The object is of simple form, being made from a piece of sheet metal, folded double, and joined at the open end by two small copper-alloy rivets, located one on each corner. It measures 30.4mm long by 13.3mm wide and 1.1mm thick. It weighs 2.55g. The surfaces are corroded and the object is slightly bent. The suggested date, based on similar examples excavated in London, is 13th to 14th century (Egan and Pritchard; 1991; "Dress Accessories"; Museum of London; pp. 130).

A medieval copper-alloy strap-end. A two-piece strap-end which probably dates from the 14th century AD. The upper plate has been cast and is joined at the distal end to the sheet metal back plate. The attachment half of the upper plate tapers slightly from right to left (as you look at it) and extends into a narrow waisted section. This, in turn, extends into a decorative terminal with a convex outer edge and moulded decoration depicting a scallop shell.
