A lead Early Tudor token (c.1490-1545). These tokens were usually a lead, tin, pewter alloy (Mitchiner and Skinner 1984:102). The token probably belongs to the Tau Cross type, although the reverse is plain. The obverse has a plain cross in a circle with an oblique anti-clockwise ray border. It is similar to no. 13 plate 6 pg. 147 in Mitchiner and Skinner "Early Tudor Tokens c.1425-1672" British Numismatic Journal vol. 54 1984, although there are wider spaces between the rays in the border. All the tokens featured in this article have a London provenance. It is likely this token a…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval copper alloy harness mount (15th-16th century). The mount is circular and slightly domed. The front is decorated with a beast left, head facing and the pointed tail curves up over the back. The entire motif is enclosed within a raised border. The beast resembles the lion of St Mark although there is a similar beast depicted on a harness pendant where the beast is described as a “fantastic monster” that is purely decorative (Ashley 2002: 17 no. 155). The reverse is irregularly concave, suggesting the shape has been distorted by damage. In the centre of the reverse i…

A Medieval copper alloy cast anthropomorphic mount, most likely a harness pendant (13th - 14th century). The mount depicts a female figure. The face has been cast in high relief with almond-shaped eyes and broad nose. The brows are formed from an extension of the nose line. An incised semi-circular line around the face creates a raised border representing hair or a headdress. The pendant narrows below the head and then expands to form the torso before narrowing at the waist. The curve possibly represents breasts. At the waist the pendant then expands to form a sphere with three moulde…

A copper alloy domed thimble, probably 15th - 17th Century. The thimble has an unthickened rim. There is a triangular section in the rim that may be a mend. This triangular section is level with the external surface but is stepped back from the internal surface. There is a curved notch missing from the rim. It may have originally been a circular perforation (below the decoration but just above the rim) that has worn through. The edges of the break have the same glossy deep green patina as the rest of the thimble. The shape of the timble has been slightly distorted possibly due to…
