Object type: BEAD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bracknell Forest
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An opaque green glass short barrel bead. There is a similar bead described as Post-Roman illustrated in Crummy (1988 no.628 fig. 34 pg. 32-33), however it is 'black' glass rather than green. The bead may be Early Medieval. MacGregor illustrates a silver wire ring threaded with a green glass bead (1993 no.55.4 pg.262). The bead is unclear in the image but it is of a similar size to this bead. Dimensions: Diameter: 5.45mm; diameter of perforation: 1.49mm; weight: 0.18g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The upper half of a stone rotary quern. Sally Worrell has discounted it being either Iron Age or Roman. Ottaway & Rogers (2002:2799) state that rotary querns were used widely during the middle and later Saxon periods but that prohibition during the 12th century resulted in the decline of their use. No exact parallel was found for this quernstone to assist with dating it further. It is circular with angular/squared off edges; in the centre is an elongated circular perforation(the perforation has been worn at opposite points creating two worn semi-circular projections from the main c…

A Medieval iron axe head (10th - 13th century). The width of the axe head expands from the butt (width: 50.19mm) to the curved cutting edge (width: 88.57mm). The upper edge is straight but the lower edge curves downwards. In the centre on one side a makers mark has been stamped. The mark is a cross where the length is twice the width of the arms. It is arranged so that the long arm of the cross is aligned along the length of the axe head. The axe head is broken across the vertical perforation for attachment on the butt, ?broken in antiquity. It is similar to woodworking axes (10t…

A copper alloy openwork strap-end (Early Medieval 9th - 10th century). According to Gabor Thomas' typology it is Class E tongue-shaped Type 2 anthropomorphic. The openwork decoration forms a central figure with outstretched arms with ribbed lateral lobes or stylised beasts. The strap-end has a solid rather than a split end for attachment. There are two perforations; there is a break across the left perforation. The end of the strap-end is slightly distorted and is bent upwards; this probably occured whilst in the ground. Patchy dark green patina with red/brown metal visible through. I…

An Anglo Saxon copper-alloy strap-end dating to the 9th century. The strap-end has curving long edges shaped into scallops, and a stylised zoomorphic terminal (in this case quite stylised). An incised, curvilinear, 'S'-shaped scroll-like pattern is repeated three times along each side down the length of the strap-end, one S shape per scallop. A central pattern of a triangle, two affronted L shapes and two addorsed C shapes provides a mirror symmetry along its length. This curvilinear pattern conforms to Thomas (2003)'s Class A Type 2, 'Patterned' type. There are two rivet holes in the…

A 10th-11th Century cloisonné enamel copper-alloy disc brooch. The brooch has six equidistant rounded projections (lobes). On each of these lobes a collar of copper-alloy strip has been soldered. Inset into these collars is a sphere of translucent glass; 5 are white, 1 is green (possibly affected by copper corrosion). On the main body of the brooch a collar (again copper-alloy strip) has been soldered and inset into this is the cloisonné enamel disc. A copper alloy stirrup strap mount (1000-1050). According to Williams typology this stirrup strap mount is Class A (sub-triangular) and Type 1 where the decoration consists of a pair of addorsed (back to back) beasts. The decoration is raised as opposed to engraved or punched. Williams notes only one example within Type 1 where the decoration is raised (1997:27 no.1); now defined as Type 1A (Webley 2014). The decoration consists of a pair of addorsed beasts and the outline of the two heads creates the distinctive knobbed profile. The beasts bodies are presented by an interlocking…

The object is broken across this loop. An incomplete copper alloy Early Medieval object of unidentified form (probably 6th century AD). It is rectangular in plan with a further rectangular element set at right angles to one of the short sides of the rectangle. It is likely that this object was originally symmetrical with a similar element on the opposite side, but nothing now remains of this and the breaks that occurred in antiquity are now rounded and worn. Within the large rectangular area there are a series of decorative features; a rectangular panel is surrounded by a gilded recess and then by a moulded border. The …
